Gower, Shanker Win Singles Flights At Mount St. Mary's Invitattional
EMMITSBURG, Md. - Sophomore Kyle Gower and freshman Charlie Shanker won singles titles in their flights as the Loyola University men's tennis team closed out play at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Gower won the title in Flight "B" while Shanker was the champion of Flight "E". Loyola was the only team with more than one singles champion at the tournament. Host Mount St. Mary's, Delaware and Harford C.C. each had one singles titlist.
With the threat of rain cancelling all of Sunday's action, the tournament's final rounds were played on Saturday.
Gower reached the championship round with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Parth Sharma of Mount St. Mary's. In the championship match, the Oceanside, N.Y. native defeated Luis Marcano of Delaware, 6-2, 6-4.
Shanker reached the finals with a 6-2, 6-2 semifinal victory over Sean McNulty of Mount St. Mary's. In the championship match, Shanker dispatched Juan Nuranjo of Harford C.C. by 6-0, 6-2.
Nuranjo had beaten freshman Rodrigo Moreno of Loyola in a semifinal match, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 10-7. However, Moreno bounced back to take third place in Flight "E", beating Sean McNulty of Mount St. Mary's, 6-4, 4-6, 10-6.
In Flight "A," Jones lost in the semifinals to Brandon Wortkotter of The Mount, 6-4, 6-1. But, he came back to beat Max Kane of Bucknell University in the third place match, 7-5, 3-6, 10-7.
In the consolation bracket, junior Reid Burch won the consolation finals in Flight "B." He won a match against Coppin State's Igor De Souza when De Souza, who was trailing, retired. He won the consolation finale by default.
In Flight "A," junior Brian Hoffarth advanced in the consolation round with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Venkatesh Ramkumar of Delaware. However, he fell to Blaise Casselbury of Delaware in the finals, 6-1, 6-4.
Senior Jack Shortell won a consolation match in Flight "D" as he defeated Andres Diaz of Coppin State, 6-2, 6-2. But he fell in the consolation final to Andre Sturniola of Coppin, 2-6, 6-2, 10-6. Junior Colin Kanuch also competed in Flight "D" and lost to Sturniola in a consolation match, 6-3, 6-2. Then, Kanuch took seventh place with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Cruz.
In doubles action, Hoffarth and Gower won the consolation finale in Flight "A." They reached the consolation finals with a 6-4 win over Sturniola and DeSouza of Coppin State. They won the consolation final with a 6-4 victory over Grayson Selby and Antoine La Gloan of Harford C.C. Selby and La Gloan had pulled out a 7-5 win over Jones and Matt Fitzmaurice in the consolation bracket. However, Jones and Fitzmaurice won the seventh place match by beating Sturniola and DeSouza, 6-2.
In Flight "B" doubles, Shortell and Kanuch won their consolation match against Sean McNulty and Chris Lindsey of Mount St. Mary's, 6-3. But they lost the consolation finale, dropping a 6-1 decision to Juan Narenjo and Treston Diaz of Harford C.C.
In Flight "C" doubles, which featured a round-robin format, Shanker and Moreno dropped both of their matches on Saturday. They dropped a 6-3 decision to Gabrielle Franca and Diaz of Coppin and fell to Zaipo Oula of Coppin and Zachary Shaeffer of Harford, 6-3.
The Greyhounds continue their fall season next weekend when they travel to Lehigh University to compete in the Patriot League Men's Tennis Kickoff. Action begins on Saturday, October 14 at 9:00 and continues on Sunday, October 15 at 9:00 a.m.
