Four Men's Tennis Players Advance At Mount St. Mary's Invitational
EMMITSBURG, Md. - Four members of the Loyola University men's tennis team won their singles matches and advanced to the semifinals of the Mount St. Mary's Invitational on Friday afternoon.
In Flight A singles, Jones pulled out a tough match against Blaise Casselbury of Delaware. He won the match, 7-6, 0-6, 10-7. He will face Brandon Wortkotter of Mount St. Mary's in the semifinals on Saturday.
Gower defeated Grayson Selby of Harford Community College in their Flight B singles match. He beat Selby, 6-4, 6-4. Gower will play Parth Sharma of Mount St. Mary's in the semifinals.
In Flight E singles, Shanker and Moreno both advanced to the semifinals. Shanker soundly defeated Zaipo Oula of Coppin State, 6-0, 6-0. He will meet Sean McNulty of Mount St. Mary's in the semifinals on Saturday. Moreno also posted an impressive victory over Zachary Shaeffer of Harford Community College, 6-0, 6-0. Moreno will face Juan Naranjo of Harford in the semifinals.
Junior Brian Hoffarth dropped his Flight A singles match to Max Kane of Boston University, 6-0, 6-1. He will play in the consolation bracket. Senior Reid Burch also fell in Flight B singles, losing to Luis Marcano of Delaware, 6-2, 6-0.
Senior Tyler Blessing and sophomore Matt Fitzmaurice both fell in Flight C singles. Blessing defaulted his match to Jean Armstrong of The Mount. Fitzmaurice also defaulted his match against Antoine La Gloan of Harford. Both of them will play in the consolation bracket on Saturday.
Senior Jack Shortell and junior Colin Kanuch both dropped their matches in Flight D singles. Shortell lost to John Brett of Harford, 6-1, 6-0. Kanuch dropped his match to Dawit Tesfit of Harford, 6-2, 7-5.
The Greyhounds struggled in doubles play, dropping all five matches. In Flight A doubles, Hoffarth and Gower were beaten by Wood and Brandon Wortkotter of Mount St. Mary's, 6-4. Jones and Fitzmaurice lost to Max Kane and Gerber of Boston, 6-2.
In Flight B doubles, Shortell and Kanuch lost to Jorge Rodriguez-Rey and Gavin Lewis of Coppin State, 6-1. Burch and Blessing defaulted to Luis Marcano and Dominick Perez of Delaware.
In the round robin portion of doubles play, Shanker and Moreno were beaten by Juan Narenjo and Treston Diaz of Harford, 6-3.
With rain in the forecast for Sunday, the final rounds of the Mount St. Mary's Invitational will be played on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.
