Jones, Fitzmaurice Take Third At Loyola Invitational
Jones and Fitzmaurice knocked off a mixed team of Morgan State's Nihit Rawal and Loyola's Charlie Shanker in a doubles tiebreaker, 7-6 (3). Both singles matches were defaulted, giving the Loyola tandem the win.
Mount St. Mary's Jackson Wood and Jean Armstrong took fifth place, defeating Loyola's C.J. Cash and Reid Burch. The Mount's pair won, 6-3, in doubles, and Wood was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Cash in singles. Tyler Blessing filled in for the other singles match for the Greyhounds, topping Armstrong, 6-2, 6-2.
Brian Hoffarth and Kyle Gower claimed 13th place in the invitational, beating fellow Greyhounds Peter Kelley and Rodrigo Moreno. Hoffarth and Gower won, 6-2, in doubles, and Hoffarth dispatched Kelley, 6-0, 6-0 in singles. Gower was then a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Moreno.
Collin Kanuch and Jack Shortell fell in the 15th-place match to Johns Hopkins' Robbie Simon and Matt Laurie. The Blue Jays scored a 6-3 victory in doubles, and Simon was a 6-1, 6-0 winner against Kanuch in singles play. Laurie also defeated Shortell, 6-2, 6-3.
The men's tennis team is back in action next weekend as it travels to Emmitsburg, Maryland, for the Mount St. Mary's Invitational. Play begins on Friday afternoon.
