Lanciano, Martin Capture Doubles Title; Martin To Play For Singles Crown
EMMITSBURG, Md. - Freshman Kateri Martin and senior Amanda Lanciano of Loyola University Maryland teamed up to win the Flight A Doubles title, highlighting the second day of competition at the Mount St. Mary’s Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
For Martin and Lanciano, it was their second doubles championship of the season. Earlier this month, they won a doubles title at the Bucknell Invitational.
Martin will play for the Flight A Singles title, as well, on Sunday.
In the doubles semifinals on Saturday, Martin and Lanciano defeated Natalie Weaver and Nanea Perkins of Siena, 6-1. Then, they earned a 6-4 victory over Kylie Mullaney and Anessa Leyva of Siena in the championship match.
Martin also enjoyed success in singles play. In the Flight A semifinals, she defeated Alexa Quintanilla by 6-2, 0-6, 10-8. That earned her a spot in the championship match on Sunday where she will face Sydney Green of George Mason.
In the consolation bracket of Flight A singles, Lanciano earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Hannah Davis of Mount St. Mary’s.
In Flight B singles action, freshman Chloe Boustany was forced to withdraw from her semi-final match against Rina Saki of Siena. However, Lin Robertson won her consolation match with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Rachel Lee of George Mason. In the consolation bracket of Flight C, Alex Agee dropped 6-3, 6-4 decision to Leyva. But, senior Nicole Eberle earned a tough win over Megan Gamble of The Mount. Eberle outlasted Gamble, 6-7(5), 6-4, 10-5.
In the semifinals of Flight D Singles, freshman Jenna Granato dropped a 1-6, 6-0, 10-5 decision to Julianna Goehner of Siena. In the consolation bracket, senior Julie Clark posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Julie Dunbar of Siena.
In other doubles action, Agee and Robertson lost their consolation bracket match to Hannah Davis and Megan Smith of Mount St. Mary’s, 6-3.
In Flight B Doubles, Eberle and Clark reached the championship round with a 6-1 victory over Liz Lowe and Hannah Cianciola of George Mason. But, they fell in the championship match as they dropped a 6-4 verdict to Kayleigh Hahn and Nicole Haigwood of George Mason.
In the consolation bracket of Flight B Doubles, Boustany and Granato came up with a 6-2 win over Maria Rey and Rosario Bove of Harford Community College. In their second match of the day, they dropped a 6-0 verdict to Sruthi Kempath and Emma Blake of Mount St. Mary’s.
The Mount St. Mary’s Invitational concludes on Sunday.
