Jones, Fitzmaurice To Play For Third At Loyola Invitational
Jones and Fitzmaurice defeated Jackson Wood and Jean Armstromg of Mount St. Mary's in the quarterfinals, 2-1, opening the round with a 6-3 victory in doubles action. Wood got past Jones, 6-1, 7-5, but Fitzmaurice scored the winning point for the Greyhounds team, beating Armstong, 5-7, 6-1, (10-9).
The Loyola duo then faced Arjun Ramakrishnan and Lucas Krusinski of Morgan State in the semifinals. The Bears' pair earned a 6-4 win in doubles, and Ramakrishnan topped Jones, 6-2, 6-4, to win the round for Morgan State. Fitzmaurice, however, scored a point for the Greyhounds with a 6-4, 5-7, (10-3), victory over Krusinski.
Jones and Fitzmaurice will face another Greyhounds player in the third-place match, as Charlie Shanker advanced to the semifinals while playing with Morgan State's Nihit Rawal.
Rawal and Shanker played Loyola's C.J. Cash and Reid Burch in the quarterfinals, defeating the Greyhounds duo, 2-1. The mixed pair won, 6-4, in doubles, and Rawal was a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Cash. Burch knocked off Shanker, 6-1, 2-6, (10-3).
The Morgan State and Loyola pair faced Alex Matisse and Collin Muraika of Johns Hopkins in the semifinals, falling, 2-1, to the Blue Jays. The Johns Hopkins two won 6-3 in doubles, and Matisse clinched the round with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Rawal. Shanker scored a win in singles play, beating Muriaka, 7-6 (4) in the first set before the Blue Jays player defaulted due to injury in the second.
Cash and Burch will play for fifth place on Sunday after sweeping Parth Sharma and Evan Hine of Mount St. Mary's. The Loyola duo won, 6-4, in doubles, and Cash was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Sharma. Burch then beat Hine, 4-6, 6-2, (10-3).
In consolation bracket play, Kyle Gower and Brian Hoffarth fell, 2-1, to Morgan State's Oguzhan Ceylan and Sebastian Lopez. The Bears pair won, 7-5, in doubles, and Ceylan was a 6-2, 7-6 (5) winner over Hoffarth in singles. Gower scored a point for Loyola with a 1-6, 6-4, (10-6) win over Lopez.
Gower and Hoffarth bounced back with a sweep of Johns Hopkins' Robbie Simon and Matt Laurie later in the day. Loyola's twosome won, 6-4, in doubles, and Hoffarth knocked off Simon, 6-1, 6-2. Gower was a 7-6 (3), 1-6, (10-5) winner, as well.
They will play fellow Greyhounds Peter Kelley and Rodrigo Moreno for 13th place on Sunday. Kelly and Moreno beat two other Loyola players, Colin Kanuch and Jack Shortell, on Saturday. Kelley and Moreno were 6-3 doubles winners, and Kelley beat Kanuch, 4-6, 6-0, (10-7) in singles.
Play is scheduled to resume Sunday at 9 a.m. at the McClure Tennis Center.
