Men's Tennis Finishes Strong At Villanova Invitational

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Led by senior Blest Jones and sophomore Matt Fitzmaurice, the Loyola University Maryland men’s tennis team bounced back from a slow start to finish strong at the Villanova University Invitational over the weekend.

The tournament was held in a points-of-the-compass format. In that format, players are paired as teams and play one doubles and two singles matches against other teams. The best-of-three winning team advances to the next round.

Playing in the Blue Draw on Saturday, Jones and Fitzmaurice swept Rider, 3-0. Jones posted an 8-3 win over Lyander Payano of Rider while Fitzmaurice edged Diego Delgado, 6-3, 6-1. In doubles, Jones and Fitzmaurice beat Payano and Delgado, 6-2.

Also playing in the Blue Draw on Saturday, junior C.J. Cash and freshman Charlie Shanker dropped a 3-0 decision to Saint Joseph’s. In singles action, Andre Fick outlasted Cash, 8-3. Meanwhile, Luis Janko beat Shanker, 6-3, 6-2. In doubles play, Fick and Janko were 6-1 winners over the Loyola duo.

In the White Draw on Saturday, the Greyhounds split a pair of matches.

Junior Brian Hoffarth and sophomore Kyle Gower combined to post a 3-0 win over Lafayette. Hoffarth defeated Paul Caruso in singles, 8-1. Gower recorded a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Chris Kim. In doubles play, Hoffarth and Gower beat Caruso and Kim. 6-2.

At the same time, junior Colin Kanuch and senior Jack Shortell lost a heartbreaker to Wagner, 2-1. Shortell won his singles match with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Allen Wang of Wagner. When Siddharth Anand beat Kanuch in singles by a 6-2, 6-1 margin, it came down to the doubles match. Wagner prevailed with a 7-5 victory to clinch the match.



In Sunday’s action, all four Loyola teams posted victories.

In the Blue Draw, Jones and Fitzmaurice closed out the competition with 3-0 win over Lafayette. Jones edged Blake Olsan in singles, 6-3, 1-6, 10-6 while Fitzmaurice posted an 8-3 win over John Yurconic. In doubles play, Jones and Fitzmaurice beat Olsan and Yurconic, 6-3.

Cash and Shanker also finished off the weekend on a high note with a 2-1 victory over Lafayette. Shanker came from behind to edge Andrew Reed in singles play, 4-6, 6-2, 10-4. However, Mason Keel outlasted Cash, 6-4, 7-6 (4). In the doubles contest, Cash and Shanker came up with a 6-2 victory over Keel and Reed to win the match.

In the White Draw on Sunday, Hoffarth and Gower combined for a 3-0 victory over Chestnut Hill. Hoffarth rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 singles win over Jesus Daries of Chestnut Hill. Gower defeated David Villareal in singles, 8-2. In the doubles match, Hoffarth and Gower earned a 6-4 victory over their Chestnut Hill counterparts.

Kanuch and Shortell also finished the weekend on a high note as they edged Rider, 2-1. Griffen Clark of Rider edged Kanuch in singles, 7-5, 6-2. But, Shortell earned a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Brandon Gildea to even the match. In the decisive doubles match, Kanuch and Shortell teamed up for a 6-4 win over Clark and Gildea.

There were nine teams involved in the Villanova Invitational, a tournament that the host Wildcats won. In addition to the host Wildcats and Loyola, Chestnut Hill, Delaware, Lafayette, LaSalle, Rider, Saint Joseph’s and Wagner Chestnut Hill competed in the three-day event.

The Greyhounds return to action next weekend when they host the Loyola Men’s Invitational at the McClure Tennis Center. Action starts on Friday, September 22 at 2:00 p.m. and resumes on Saturday and Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
