Tennis Teams Wrap Up Weekend Action

The Loyola University Maryland men's and women's tennis teams continued their seasons by competing in the eight-team St. Joseph's Men's Invitational and the eight-team Bill and Sandra Moore Invitational on the women's side over the weekend.

Junior Blest Jones led the way for Loyola's men as he won the consolation singles title in Flight 1 singles. After dropping a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Lehigh's George Cooper, Jones came alive in the consolation bracket.

He defeated Luis Miranda of Villanova, 6-3, 7-5 to advance. Then, he outlasted Blake Oslan of Lafayette, 6-2, 6-1 to reach the finals. In the finals, he defeated Bradley Noyes of Villanova, 7-5, retired.

Jones was one of four Greyhounds in the Flight 1 singles bracket. Junior Reid Burch defeated Drew Rook of Lafayette, 6-4, 6-0. But he fell to Kyle Chalmers of St. Joseph's in the second round, 6-1, 1-0 (retired).

Sophomore J.J. Good lost his first round match to Villanova's Tyler Roth, 6-2, 6-3, and Brian Hoffarth also fell in his first round match to Dominick Perez of Delaware, 0-6, 6-2 (10-1).

In Flight 2 singles, junior Tyler Blessing lost to Colin Sacco of Bucknell in a close match, 5-7, 6-2, 14-12. Sophomore C.J. Cash fell to Stefan Suarez of Villanova, 7-6, 6-2.

In Flight 3 singles, Kyle Gower dropped a 6-0, 6-1 match to Dan Tan of St. Joseph's. Brett Shriver fell to Timber Erskin of Bucknell, 6-3, 6-3. Matt Bejian also lost in the first round, falling to Tyler Hansen of Lehigh, 6-0, 6-1.

Three Greyhounds played in Flight 4 singles among the 12 Loyola players who participated in the tournament. Senior John Ferruzi lost his first match, falling to Alexander Schneider of St. Joseph's, 7-6, 6-2. Junior Jack Shortell came up his a first round victory, edging Mike Czionka of Villanova, 6-2, 3-6, 10-6. Sophomore Colin Kanuch dropped a 6-3, 6-1 match to Vuk Subotic of Drexel, 6-3, 6-1.

The team of Jones and Shriver won two matches in No. 1 Doubles before falling to Tyler Roth and Stefan Suarez in the semifinals, 8-5.

In other consolation action, Cash reached the 2 Flight singles final with wins over Matt DeBendette of Lafayette (6-4, 6-2) and Ethan Bogard of Lehigh (6-4, 6-4 (10-8). However, he lost to Matt Phelps of Villanova in the consolation finals, 6-3, 1-0, retired.

On the women's side, Freshmen Lin Robertson and Alexandria Agee won their first match over a team from Navy, 6-3. However, Robertson and Agee were beaten in the semi-finals by Audrey Channell and Danika Kahatapitiya of Navy, 6-3.

Senior Ania Krawiec and freshman Sydney Siembida also played doubles for Loyola and fell to Briana Maravich and Cassidy Cruz of Lehigh, 6-1.

In the B Flight singles, Krawiec lost her first round match to Audrey Channell of Navy, 6-1. However, she bounced back to beat Clara Herberts of St. Bonaventure in the consolation bracket, 8-3. But she fell to Catalina Rico of Navy in the consolation semifinals.

Robertson also played singles in the B Flight. After losing to Aimee Dervishian of Navy, 6-2, 6-4, she fell to Jamie Campisi of Lehigh in the consolation bracket, 8-4.

Agee competed in the C Flight singles for Loyola. She dropped a tough decision to Sabrina Jiang of Navy, 6-3, 7-5. In the consolation round, Agee fell to Kristin Godau of Lehigh, 8-2.

Loyola's men return to its home court next weekend by hosting the Loyola Invitational at the McClure Tennis Center. Meanwhile, the women are in action next weekend when the Greyhounds travel to Philadelphia for the St. Joseph's Invitational.
