Sept. 15, 2013
EMMITSBURG, Md. - Five Loyola University Maryland tennis players won their respective singles flights on Sunday at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational, and a men's duo won their doubles bracket, capping a successful weekend of fall competition.
Connor Pietrak (Men's `A'), Greg Olesnycky (Men's `B'), Alex Castro (Men's `D'), Megan Hahn (Women's `A') and Ania Krawiec (Women's `B') all won their singles flights, while Pietrak and Castro paired to top teammates Matthew Bejian and Maxwell Shanbrom in the Men's `B' Doubles title match.
Pietrak downed the host school's Peter Salomon in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-3, and Olesnycky rallied from a 0-6 loss in the first set to win the second, 6-4, before beating Bucknell's Jon DeFrancesch, 10-5, in a super-tiebreaker to win the flight.
Castro then beat Bejian in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-1, to give the Greyhounds three of the four singles flight championships.
In women's action, Hahn lost the opening set to Bucknell's Maria Coiffi, 1-6, but she evened the match with a 6-2 win in the second set. Hahn then outlasted Coiffi, 11-9, in the super-tiebreaker, edging the Bucknell player for the flight title for the second weekend in a row.
Krawiec took her flight with a default win over teammate Haleigh Morgus.
One other Greyhounds' singles player advanced to the championship matches of her brackets before losing, as Alexandra Billups fell, 6-4, 6-2, to Bucknell's Jorie Fox. In doubles play, Hahn and Olivia Ott made it to the `A' Doubles final before falling, 8-3, to Coiffi and Elania Vidrascu of Bucknell.
