Tennis Opens Fall Schedule Friday at Bucknell
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshmen Jenna Granato and Kateri Martin won their collegiate singles debuts Friday as the Loyola University Maryland men's and women's tennis teams opened their seasons at the Bucknell Fall Invite.
Both of the Greyhounds' men's and women's teams are competing in the weekend-long event, along with teams from Howard, Lafayette, St. Francis (Pa.), Mount St. Mary's, Indiana (Pa.) and the host Bison.
In singles action on Friday, Martin won her Flight 1 singles match, beating Paige Leavy of Bucknell, 6-4, 6-4. Senior Amanda Lanciano also represented the Greyhounds in Flight 1 but she dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision to Laura Gutierrez of St. Francis. Senior Nicole Eberle lost her Flight 1 singles match, falling to Grace Conrad of Lafayette, 6-3, 6-4.
In the women's Flight 2 singles, sophomore Lin Robertson advanced with a 7-4, 4-6, (10-5) victory over Katya Minchenhorn of Indiana (Pa.). Sophomore Alexandria Agee of Loyola dropped her close Flight 2 singles match to Mishi Papich of Bucknell, 6-2, 4-6, 10-8.
In Flight 3 singles, Granato earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Sajela Harlow of Howard. Senior Julie Clark also came up with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Allie Lane of Bucknell.
Freshmen Gabrielle Horchos and Kendall Kutner of Loyola competed in Flight 4 singles but both of them dropped their opening matches. Christina Joyner of Howard trimmed Horchos, 6-3, 6-0, and Aria Ragas of Howard edged Kutner, 6-1, 6-0.
In Flight 1 doubles action for the women, Lanciano and Martin teamed up for a 6-3 win over Emilie Bush and Schuyler LaBarge of Bucknell. However, Robertson and Agee lost their match, falling to Leavy and Papish of Bucknell, 6-4. In another Flight 1 doubles match, Nicole Ebele and Clark dropped a 6-2 verdict to Yassmin Khiri and Kindha Naref of Howard.
Freshman Chloe Boustany teamed up with Granato for a Flight 2 doubles match but they fell to Megan Smith and Emma Blake of Mount St. Mary's. The Greyhounds' other doubles team, Kutner and Horchos, beat Macquarie Simon and Anavi Arnad of Lafayette, 6-3.
Doubles was the only action on the men's side Friday.
In Flight 2 doubles, Tyler Blessing and Colin Kanuch dropped a tight 7-6 decision to David Schrott and Nick Silvestri of Hofstra. Kyle Gower and Brian Hoffarth also lost a Flight 2 doubles match to Parth Sharma and Chris Lindsey of Mount St. Mary's, 6-0.
Action resumes on Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
