Women's Tennis Season Review
June 2, 2013
BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland women’s tennis team tallied their 28th consecutive season with double-digit victories, as the Greyhounds went 14-7 overall. In conference play, Loyola sported a 4-4 record in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, falling to Fairfield University in the semifinals of the conference tournament.
For the season, the women posted records of 126-73 and 66-35 in singles and doubles, respectively.
Junior Tiffany Ash collected an undefeated record in the MAAC this season in singles and doubles, placing her on 1st Team All-MAAC for singles and 2nd Team for doubles with senior captain Scarlett Hoy. Ash went 6-0 at #6 singles and 6-0 at #3 doubles.
Sophomore Olivia Ott posted 21 wins in consecutive seasons at singles and 47 wins in doubles in her two seasons with the Greyhounds. The record for the program is 70, as she looks to trump that number heading into her junior season.
Senior captain Hoy concluded her career at Loyola with impressive numbers, helping the Greyhounds to a 54-27 record in her four years. Hoy accomplished 50 victories in singles and 52 doubles wins. She closed out her career by earning 2nd Team All-MAAC honors for #4 singles and #3 doubles with teammate Ash. In MAAC play, Hoy went 4-4 for the season at singles.
Senior Gabriella DeCarvalho will also be graduating from Loyola after four years with the Greyhounds. DeCarvalho finished her career with six singles wins and seven doubles victories, going 6-6 her senior year.
The women’s team showed plenty of potential for upcoming seasons with remarkable performances from the freshmen class.
The Greyhounds were led at #1 singles by freshman Megan Hahn. Hahn broke the all-time singles victories in a season, held by Rachel Janasek, with 25 wins in her first season. Janasek set the record last season with 24. The freshman found her way on to the 2nd Team All-MAAC at #1 singles with a 6-1 record in the conference. She also received 2nd Team honors at #2 singles with teammate Ott.
Freshmen Haleigh Morgus and Emily Hughes teamed up at #1 doubles for most of the season, as they landed 1st Team All-MAAC honors at #1 doubles with a 6-1 record in the conference. For the season, Morgus collected 19 singles victories and 23 wins in doubles. Hughes finished her first season with 20 singles victories and 21 doubles wins for the Greyhounds.
Three Greyhounds were honored this season on great academic standing, as Ash, DeCarvalho and Ott were placed on the All-MAAC Academic Team. DeCarvalho has been a three-time All-MAAC Academic Team selection throughout her career with Loyola.
The women’s squad placed first over all sports at Loyola posting a 3.45 team GPA for the year.
Coach Rick McClure will continue on at the helm of the program as the program makes the transition from the MAAC to the Patriot League next season. The women’s squad has posted a 363-110 record through the 25 years of the program. In that time, the Greyhounds have won eight team championships and four NCAA bids. They also sported a 42 MAAC match winning-streak from September 6, 1997 to April 21, 2002.
