Men's Tennis Season Review
June 2, 2013
BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland men's tennis team put on another great showing this season as they concluded with a 13-7 record overall. This will be their fifth consecutive season with double-digit victories. In conference play, the Greyhounds finished their season with a 3-4 record, falling in the semifinals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament to Marist College.
For the season, the men sported a 60-49 record in doubles play. The Greyhounds were led by senior captain Bobby Gorczakowski and freshman Connor Pietrak at #1 doubles, as the duo set a school record with 22 wins with the same partner. They finished the season 22-11 overall, 4-3 in MAAC play.
Sophomore Harrison Kunkel made the transition at the beginning of the season from #6 singles to #2 and posted 14 victories for the Greyhounds. Kunkel teamed up with teammates Connor Lisco and Keishi Goto at #2 doubles throughout the schedule for 13 wins.
Junior Lisco, after studying abroad in the fall, came back to the squad for a strong spring season. Lisco went 11-5 overall at #5 singles, while going 6-3 at #2 doubles with Kunkel, 3-1 in MAAC play.
Senior captain Gorczakowski closed out his career with the Greyhounds in record-setting fashion. Gorczakowski will graduate with the most all-time doubles wins in a career at 64-34, the most doubles wins in a season with the same partner (freshman Pietrak) with 22 victories, and the second most singles wins all-time in a Greyhound career with a 62-36 record to 2003 graduate John McConnell's career leading 66 wins.
For the season, the senior notched 12 victories at #1 singles and 22 victories at #1 doubles.
Also graduating is senior C.J. Chomeau. Chomeau finished his Greyhound career sporting four singles and two doubles victories for Loyola.
The Greyhounds look to have a bright future with standout performances by the freshmen class this season.
Pietrak made his mark at #3 singles this season after collecting 13 wins for Loyola. He also set the school record with 22 wins with the same partner in the program's history with teammate Gorczakowski.
Freshman Jordan Kuchta started his career with Loyola with double-digit victories in singles and doubles as well with 15 wins at #4 singles and 19 doubles at #3. Out of the 19 doubles victories, 14 were tallied with fellow freshman Greg Olesnycky.
Olesnycky posted a 12-6 overall record at #6 singles for the Greyhounds, while going 2-3 in the MAAC.
Alex Castro also made an impression and looks to contribute to the team the next three seasons, as he went 10-5 in singles and contributed six wins in doubles.
Three Greyhounds found their way on to the All-MAAC Academic Team this season. Chomeau, Gorczakowski and Lisco all exhibited great GPA's for Loyola and were honored with All-MAAC honors.
Gorczakowski and Chomeau have been three-time All-MAAC Academic Team selections throughout their careers.
The men's squad placed second among all men's teams at Loyola with academic standing, holding a 3.3 GPA.
Coach Rick McClure will join the Greyhounds as they make the transition from the MAAC to the Patriot League next season. In the 34 years McClure has coached the men's program, the team has posted a 307-300 record.
