Men and Women's Tennis Ends Season In Semifinals
April 27, 2013
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - The Loyola University Maryland men and women's tennis teams fell in the semifinals at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament to Marist College and Fairfield University Saturday afternoon in West Windsor, N.J.
The men's team came up short against Marist College, 4-0, at Mercer County Park, as the Red Foxes stole the early doubles point and notched the first three singles matches. In doubles, #3 doubles Jordan Kuchta and Greg Olesnycky threw their last efforts in against their opponent, but lost 8-2. To seal the doubles point, Marist's Dalen Klassen and Billy Bishop knocked off #1 doubles Bobby Gorczakowski and Connor Pietrak, 8-2.
In singles, the Red Foxes continued the momentum with victories at #2, 3 and 4 to advance to the MAAC Championship.
The women's team faced #1 seed Fairfield University in the morning Saturday but couldn't quite get the rackets hot, as they fell to the Stags, 4-1.
In doubles, Fairfield's Margaret McLaughlin and Victoria Pirrello started the day at #3 doubles with an 8-4 victory over Loyola's Scarlett Hoy and Tiffany Ash. #2 doubles Megan Hahn and Olivia Ott brought the score back to even with a strong finish in their match, 8-6. With both teams looking for the early point, #1 doubles was a toss up between two great duos. Fairfield's Carolina Koladzyn and Monica Yajima bettered Emily Hughes Haleigh Morgus in a great 9-7 match to give the Stags the 1-0 lead heading into singles.
In singles, sophomore Ott put the Greyhounds on the board with a clutch win at #5 singles over Pirrello, 6-1, 7-6 (6-0). Fairfield took over from there with three straight singles' victories at #1, 2 and 3 to seal their trip to the MAAC Championship.
