Victories Seal Trip To MAAC Championships
April 20, 2013
BALTIMORE - With Saint Peter's standing in the way of entrance into the MAAC Championships, the Loyola University Maryland men and women's tennis teams powered through Saturday afternoon on Alumni Day at Butler Courts to seal the four-seed in next weekend's tournament.
The women's team came out firing early in doubles as all three matches gave up a combined four points. At #1 doubles, freshmen Haleigh Morgus and Emily Hughes gave Loyola the momentum for the match with a solid 8-2 victory over Alex Livingston and Joniesa Williams of Saint Peter's. #2 doubles Megan Hahn and Olivia Ott and #3 doubles Scarlett Hoy and Tiffany Ash gave the Greyhounds the early 1-0 lead, as they both won their matches, 8-1.
In singles, #6 Ash continued the Greyhound charge finishing with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Saint Peter's Jessica Norogzodzki. Finishing close behind Ash was #5 singles Ott with a great match of 6-1, 6-1. With the 3-0 lead, Morgus sealed the match for Loyola with a hard fought victory over Peacock's Adina Halagian, 6-4, 6-1. The Greyhounds didn't slow down after sealing the victory as the other three matches were taken, making the final score 7-0 for the match.
The victory for the women's squad raises their season record to 13-6 for the season and places them fourth in the MAAC standings with a record of 4-3, qualifying them for next weekends MAAC Championships in West Windsor, New Jersey.
The men's team matched up very well with a good Saint Peter's team, as they pulled out a strong 5-2 victory. In doubles, #1 doubles pairing Bobby Gorczakowski and Connor Pietrak set the pace for the Greyhounds with an exciting 9-7 win over Peacock's Charlie Carrera and Oliver Bellini. Harrison Kunkel and Connor Lisco sealed the doubles point for Loyola at #2 doubles with a close 8-6 finish over Saint Peter's, giving the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Saint Peter's stole the momentum from Loyola through the first two singles matches as Gorczakowski and Kunkel both fell. With a 2-1 lead for the Peacocks, Connor Lisco placed the Greyhounds back into contention with a strong three-set finish at #5 singles, winning 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. With #6 singles being defaulted due to injury, Loyola took the 3-2 lead going into the final two singles matches. Freshmen Pietrak gave the tennis alumni an exciting match at #3 singles, going three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, to send the Greyhounds to the MAAC Championships. #4 singles Jordan Kuchta also played out a great match after going down in the first set, finishing in a three set victory, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
The victory for the men raises their record to 12-6 for the season and 3-3 in the MAAC. The win places the team fourth in the MAAC sending them to the tournament next weekend in Windsor, New Jersey.
The alumni day event on Saturday afternoon celebrated the undefeated 15-0 Mason-Dixon Conference Champions 1963 Loyola College's men's tennis team. Members of the team-- Jim Mohler, Dan Michaelis, Lou Albert, Bob Malko, and Russ Tontz-- were honored this afternoon and joined the team for a dinner celebration following the completion of the match.
The men's team is back in action Sunday as they take on LaSalle University at Butler Courts starting at 11 a.m. The women's next match is set for Tuesday, as George Mason travels to Baltimore for a 3 p.m. start.
