Women's Tennis Sweeps Mount, Men Fall

BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland women’s tennis team lost just two sets on Wednesday afternoon to Mount St. Mary’s Unviersity, defeating the Mountaineers 7-0 on Butler Courts. The Loyola men, however, lost to The Mount, 4-1.
Olivia Ott and Megan Hahn were pressed to the final point by Kelly Smith and Jennifer Smith, but the Greyhounds pair came out with an 8-7 (6) victory. Ania Krawiec and Katelyn Hissong and Haleigh Morgus and Emily Hughes secured the doubles point with 8-2 and 8-0 wins, respectively.
Ott then had a long singles match, coming back from a 2-6 first-set loss, to beat Erin Benefiel, 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the No. 5 singles slot. Haleigh Morgus was the other Greyhounds player to mount a come-from-behind win. She fell to Liz Rossi, 3-6, in the first before winning the final two sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Hahn was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Samantha Pinchott at No. 1 singles, and Hissong topped Kelly Smith, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3. Krawiec beat Taylor D’Agostino in a pro-set, 8-5, after the match had been decided, and Hughes eased to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Danielle Nguyen.
On the men’s side, Greg Olesnycky and Jordan Kuchta beat Mateo DeSommocurcio and Peter Salomon, 8-7 (4), at No. 2 doubles, but The Mount came away with victories in the other two pairs matches to earn the doubles point.
Alex Castro delivered a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win over Darren Mast at No. 6 singles, but that was the only flight in which the Greyhounds had a win.
