Tennis Teams Sweep Saint Peter's

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Loyola University Maryland men's and women's tennis teams swept matches against Saint Peter's University on Saturday with the women winning, 7-0, and the men taking a close 5-2 contest.

The men's squad earned the doubles point with tiebreaker wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Saint Peter's earned the No. 1 flight win as Adres Jacome and Pitor Sowinski topped Blest Jones and Matt Fitzmaurice, 6-4, but Loyola rallied to win the other two doubles matches.

Reid Burch and C.J. Cash held off John Oxner and Ignacio Tintore, 7-6 (6), while Brian Hoffarth and Kyle Gower edged Douglas Nover and Ivan Knezevic by the same score to give Loyola a 1-0 lead in the match.

From there, Saint Peter's won the No. 1 and 2 singles matches in straight-sets, but the Greyhounds squeezed out three-set wins at three, four and five.

Fitzmaurice was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at No. 6 against Gabriel Russotto. Burch came back against Oxner after a 1-6 setback in the first set to win 6-3, 6-3 in the second and third at No. 3 singles. Cash also fell in his first set, 6-7 (5) to Tintore, but the Loyola player ralied to win, 6-4, 7-6 (5), at No. 4.

Gower then fended off Igor Khvorostian after dropping the first, 5-7. Gower came back to win the second and third, 6-4, 6-3.

On the women's side, the Greyhounds swept the doubles matches without losing a point. Kateri Martin and Amanda Lanciano bested Stephanie Falcon and Azuri Hughes, 8-0, at No. 1, while Lin Robertson and Abby Thornton topped Marta Ortega and Jennifer Guilherme by the same margin at No. 2. Nicole Eberle and Chloe Boustany were winners at No. 3 by default.



In singles action, Loyola won all but one point.

Martin swept Falcon, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1, and Lacniano was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Huges at No. 2. Robertson won, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 against Ortega, and Thornton defeated Guilherme, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4. Boustany and Jenna Granato picked up default wins at No. 4 and 5.
