Cono, Cronin Named CollegeSwimming.com League Award Winners
BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland swimmers Ben Cono and Devin Cronin were named the Patriot League Male and Female Swimmers of the Week by CollegeSwimming.com after record-setting performances last weekend at the H2ounds invitational.
Cronin set one school individual record, tied another and was a member of a relay team that broke a school and Mangione pool record, while Cono broke a school and Patriot League mark and set two pool standards.
On Friday night, Cronin matched Loyola’s 200-yard individual medley record, swimming 2:05.10 shortly after swimming the breaststroke leg on a record-setting 400-yard medley relay. She clocked a split of 1:01.97 in the relay, helping the team turn in a time of 3:47.78.
The sophomore from Marshfield, Massachusetts, then broke the school 100-yard breaststroke record on Saturday. She touched the wall in 1:03.45 to eclipse a two-year old mark in the event.
Cono set a Patriot League record in the 100-yard breaststroke (52.57), setting a Loyola and Mangione Pool record in the process at the H2ounds Invitational. He was not done, however, as he set a pool record in the 200-yard breaststroke (1:56.75) later on Saturday.
Both of his times met the NCAA ‘B’ Qualifying Standard, and his mark in the 100 ranks fourth in NCAA Division I.
In addition to his record-setting performances in the breaststroke events, Cono, a senior from Smithtown, New York, won the 200-yard individual medley (1:49.86) and was on the winning 400-yard medley relay, swimming a breaststroke leg in 52.78.
