Cono's Records Help Him Earn Patriot League Honors
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Ben Cono had a record-setting weekend for the Loyola University Maryland men's swimming and diving team, and the senior earned his third Patriot League Male Swimmer of the Week honor of the season on Tuesday.
The Smithtown, New York, native set a Patriot League record in the 100-yard breaststroke (52.57), setting a Loyola and Mangione Pool record in the process at the H2ounds Invitational. He was not done, however, as he set a pool record in the 200-yard breaststroke (1:56.75) later on Saturday.
Both of his times met the NCAA `B' Qualifying Standard, and his mark in the 100 ranks fourth in NCAA Division I.
In addition to his record-setting performances in the breaststroke events, Cono won the 200-yard individual medley (1:49.86) and was on the winning 400-yard medley relay, swimming a breaststroke leg in 52.78.
The award is the fifth of Cono's career and his third this season. He also earned the nod on October 31 after winning three events and setting a pool record in the Greyhounds' October 28 meet at Lehigh, and he repeated on November 21 after recording his first `B' standard in the 100 breaststroke of the season.
In addition to Cono's recognition, Devin Cronin and Lindsey Staszewski were named to the Patriot League Weekly Honor Roll. Cronin set one school record (100-yard breaststroke, 1:03.45) and tied another (200-yard individual medley, 2:05.10), while swimming on a 400-yard medley relay that set a school and pool record. Staszewski won the 3-meter diving event and was third in the 1-meter event.
