Cono Named Patriot League Male Swimmer Of The Week
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Loyola University Maryland swimmer Ben Cono continued his undefeated streak in breaststroke events on Saturday, and he was named the Patriot League Male Swimmer of the Week Tuesday for his efforts.
The senior from Long Island won three events in all as the Greyhounds competed against Lehigh University, tying a pool record he had previous set in the process. He was victorious in the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes and the 200-yard individual medley after also helping Loyola to a win in the 400-yard medley relay.
His wins in the breaststrokes improved his dual-meet record to 10-0 in the event this season.
Cono opened the meet by leading Loyola to a three-plus second victory in the medley relay, and he then tied Lehigh’s pool record in the 100-yard breaststroke, a mark of 56.50 he initially set in 2015.
He came back to record a victory in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:05.27, an event he won by nearly eight seconds. Later in the program, Cono won the 200-yard individual medley, touching the wall in 1:58.59.
The award is third of Cono’s career and his first of the 2017-2018 season.
Loyola returns to home action on Friday, November 3, when it hosts Johns Hopkins University, Drexel University and West Chester University in the Thomas Murphy Invitational. Action begins at 5 p.m. on Friday followed by sessions at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday.
