Wise To Compete In 400m Free Finals At Paralympic Games Tonight
September 5, 2012
LONDON - Loyola swimmer Joe Wise will compete for Team USA in the finals of the 400-meter freestyle (S10) at the 2012 Paralympic Games at the Aquatics Centre in London, England, tonight. His race is scheduled for 12:48 a.m., ET and will be streamed live on www.Paralympics.org.
Wise, a rising sophomore from Menlo Park, Calif., finished fifth in his heat with a time of 4:18.65 this morning and will be seeded seventh in the finals. He is one of two American’s vying for a medal, as Ian Silverman – a member of North Baltimore’s Aquatic Club and coached on the national team by Loyola head coach Brian Loeffler – will take the top preliminary time into the finals, 4:13.48.
The 400m freestyle is the fourth of six events that Wise will compete in at the Games. He opened competition on Thursday with the 200m individual medley (SM10), finishing sixth in his heat with a personal-best time of 2:21.37.
He followed that up on Saturday with a seventh-place finish in his heat of the 100m butterfly (S10), touching in 1:05.63, before swimming as a member of the 4x100m freestyle relay team. The quartet combined for a time of 3:59.16 and a sixth-place finish in the finals.
Wise had a two-day break before competing in the heats of the 400m freestyle this morning. Following tonight’s finals, Wise will get back in the pool for the 100m freestyle (S10) tomorrow and then the 100m breaststroke (SB9) on Saturday.
In addition to Wise, Loeffler is also coaching Lieutenant Brad Snyder, a U.S. Navy veteran that lost his sight in an IED attack in Afghanistan in September of 2011. Snyder has already claimed one gold and one silver medal at the Games and will also compete in the finals of the 400m freestyle (S11) and 100m butterfly (S11) tonight.
Snyder claimed gold medal in his first-ever race at the Paralympic Games, touching first in the 100m freestyle (S11) in 57.43. He then set a new American Record in snagging the silver medal in the 50m freestyle (S11). He finished the race in 25.93.
Snyder also appeared in the finals of the 100m breaststroke (SB11) and the 100m backstroke (S11). He took sixth in the breaststroke with a time of 1:19.48 and touched fifth in the backstroke in 1:09.62.
Following tonight’s finals races, Snyder will conclude competition on Saturday with the 200m individual medley (SM11).
