BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland swimmer Joe Wise and head coach Brian Loeffler are in London, England with Team USA for the 2012 Paralympic Games, which began today. Wise, a rising sophomore from Menlo Park, Calif., opened competition in the 200m individual medley this morning and will represent the red, white and blue in five more events at the Aquatics Centre - the same venue as the Olympics Games - throughout the next nine days.
In addition to Wise and Loeffler, Lieutenant Brad Snyder – a U.S. Navy veteran that lost his sight in an IED attack in Afghanistan in September of 2011 and is coached by Loeffler – is also competing in the Paralympic Games. This marks the first Paralympic Games for Snyder, while this is the second for Wise – he was a member of the 2008 USA Team that competed in Beijing.
Opening ceremonies were held yesterday, Wednesday, Aug. 29, with a celebration that reflected the inspirational spirit of the Paralympic Games and challenged the perceptions of human possibility. Closing ceremonies - headlined by Coldplay – are scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 9.
Wise, a 16-time American record holder, will continue competition this weekend, swimming the 100m butterfly on Saturday and the 4x100m freestyle relay on Sunday. Following a two-day break, he will compete on Wednesday in the 400m freestyle and in the 100m freestyle on Thursday. His competition will conclude Saturday, Sept. 8 with the 100m breaststroke.
Snyder opened competition today finishing fourth in his heat of the 100m freestyle in 57.75. He will swim in the finals tonight.
He will continue competition on Saturday with the 50m freestyle and the 100m backstroke on Sunday. Monday, he will race the 100m breaststroke. Following a two-day break, Snyder will resume competition with the 100m butterfly on Thursday, 400m freestyle on Friday and the 200m individual medley on Saturday.
To keep up with Wise, Snyder and Loeffler through their journey in London, be sure to follow the U.S. Paralympics YouTube channel - which will broadcast 10 daily highlights of the games, interviews with the athletes, plus the opening and closing ceremonies. You can also watch events on Team USA's website or get updates from Joe Wise's Facebook page.
Uninterrupted, live coverage will also be aired on five channels of the International Paralympic Committee’s website, while NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) will air one-hour highlight shows on Sept. 4, 5, 6 and 11 at 7 p.m. Eastern Time. NBC will also broadcast a 90-minute special about the Paralympic Games on Sept. 16 from 2-3:30 p.m. ET. All NBC and NBC Sports Network Paralympic highlight shows and specials will re-air on Universal Sports Network and UniversalSports.com.
