March 10, 2014
BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland senior divers Michael Brown and Elle Mixa are in Blacksburg, Va., to compete in the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships Monday and Tuesday.
Mixa will take to the boards first, competing in the preliminaries of the women’s 1-meter competition at noon on Monday. There are 52 entries into the preliminary round with the top 18 advancing to Monday’s finals at 2:30 p.m. The top six finishers in the finals will advance to the NCAA Championships, which be held at the Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis on March 20-22.
Brown will compete in the men’s 1-meter preliminaries at noon on Tuesday. Of the 45 divers scheduled to compete, 18 will advance to Tuesday’s finals at 2:30 p.m., with the top five finishers advancing to NCAAs. The NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships will be held at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin on March 27-29.
Brown and Mixa are the first pair of Loyola divers in program history to advance to the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in the same season. Brown qualified the championship at the Senior Meet on January 31 when he broke the Mangione Pool record (Rider’s Paul Apostolakis, 334.45 from 2010) with a first-place finish and score of 335.85 on the 1-meter boards.
Mixa qualified for Zone Diving on January 18 when she broke the school record with a winning score of 266.92 at Lehigh. She replaced Megan Sterback’s 225.23-point performance from 2006 atop the program’s record board.
