Men's and Women's Swimming Handle Fairfield and Providence
Nov. 8, 2003
BALTIMORE - Loyola's men's and women's swimming and diving teams cruised to victories over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rival Fairfield and Big East Conference-foe Providence on Saturday afternoon at Loyola's Fitness and Aquatic Center (FAC) as both Greyhound squads remain undefeated to start the season at 4-0.
Loyola's men defeated Fairfield 67-46 and Providence 79-32 while the Greyhound women bucked the Stags 74-39 and disposed of the Friars 70-34.
"Our talent really showed today," said Loyola Head Coach Brian Loeffler. "In a double duel meet format, depth does not play as big of a role in the victory. I was happy we could defeat conference foe Fairfield and Big East rival Providence."
The talent Loeffler speaks of was displayed immediately with the Greyhound men's and women's 400 Medley and 400 Free relay teams sweeping the relay portion of the meet. Loyola also produced a number of individual double-winners on the day.
Junior Marko Turcinov heads the list of Greyhounds that took two races as he triumphed in both the 200 Fly and 200 IM competitions, while teammate Ryan Reeser won the 50 and 100 Free events. Reeser's 100 Free time of 47.79 is the second best time in Loyola history and just .02 seconds behind Mark Gallagher's 1996 school record.
On the women's side, freshman Nori Skoda picked up two more wins in her young collegiate career as she swam to victories in the 200 IM and 200 Breast events. Skoda's time of 2:13.09 in the 200 IM is the second fastest time in Loyola history while her time of 2:29.16 in the 200 Breast is Loyola's third fastest of all-time.
Greyhound diver Erin Perry had a nice day for herself, as well, winning the one-meter diving competition with a score of 208.42 and finishing second in the three-meter competition with a score of 193.90.
The undefeated start is one of Loyola's best in history and is even more impressive considering the competition that both teams have faced to this point in quality teams like Georgetown, Providence, Fairfield and Canisius.
"We're very excited for both teams to be 4-0 this early in the season," commented Loyola assistant Eric Rasmussen.
The Greyhound women return to action tomorrow at 12 noon when they host MAAC opponent Manhattan and the College of Notre Dame at the FAC. Loyola's men will swim again next weekend at the Greyhounds' Thomas Murphy Invitational, which starts on Friday night at the FAC.
