BALTIMORE - Six Greyhounds and two relay teams were victorious on the second and final day of the Thomas Murphy Invitational, leading the Loyola University Maryland swimming and diving teams to four wins on the day.

On the women’s side, senior Elle Mixa and a trio of freshmen, Courtney Kenyon, Theresa McKellan and Becca Meyers, were all victorious, leading the Greyhounds to wins over Johns Hopkins (207-156), Saint Francis (Pa.) (265-99) and Marywood (314-50), while the men’s squad split events. Loyola beat Marywood, 276-94, but fell to Johns Hopkins, 241-123.

Mixa swept the diving events this weekend, adding the 3-meter title to her 1-meter victory from last night. She won today’s event with a score of 251.85, while classmate Victoria Arturi was second with 220.72 points and freshman Samantha Freitas was third at 203.54 points.

Senior Michael Brown also led the Greyhound men to a sweep of the top-three places in the 1-meter diving event. Brown, the winner of yesterday’s 3-meter diving, took the title with a score of 291.75. Freshman Noel Theroux finished second with 258.15 and sophomore Ryan Conley was third with 234.60 points.

In the pool, freshman Aidan O’Hara won the 200 back (52.96), while Kenyon won the women’s 100 breast in 1:07.48, McKallen won the 400 IM in a time of 4:41.87 and Meyers won the 1650 free, touching in 17:37.18. Senior Sam Berizzi and freshman Stephen Tonaszuck also earned a pair of third-place finishes in the 1650 free. Berizzi finished in 18:19.88, while Tonaszuck clocked a time of 16:53.65.


 

 

A pair of Greyhound relay teams rounded out Loyola’s winners, as the women’s 200 medley relay of sophomore Elizabeth McKenna, freshman Tara Mulligan, senior Erin Shea and senior Caitlin Cronin touched first in 1:48.18. The men’s squad of sophomore Nigel Hunter, senior Zachary Eller, senior Julien Brice and junior Ruslan Kopunek teamed to win the 200 free relay with a time of 1:25.39.

In the 100 free, the Greyhounds had a pair of second and third place finishers on both the men’s and women’s side. Cronin earned a runner-up finish on the women’s side with a time of 52.52, finishing just ahead of junior Brianna Keelan, who touched third in 53.44. On the men’s side, Kopunek was second in 47.08 and Brice was third in 48.66.

Senior Noelle Staib and sophomore Cara Egan had a battle in the 200 breast, with Staib out-distancing Egan by 18-tenths of a second. Staib clocked in at 2:30.17, while Egan finished in 2:30.35. Senior Jacob Norfolk also had a third-place in the event, touching in 2:18.08.

Loyola had a pair of second-place finishers in the 100 back, with freshman Marie Clarkson and O’Hara touching in 1:00.35 and 52.96, respectively. Senior Bryan Bedacht, the recipient of the Thomas Murphy Award, also had a second-place finish in the 400 IM, while Cronin and junior Erin Calderoni finished 2-3 in the 200 free. Cronin was second in 1:54.95 and Calderoni was third in 1:57.61.

Shea and Clarkson rounded out the Greyhounds’ top finishers, with Shea taking third in the 100 fly in 59.67 and Clarkson touching third in the 200 back in 2:09.60.

Loyola will return to action next weekend when it hosts Howard on Saturday, Nov. 9. Events will begin at 1 p.m.
