BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland senior Mike Brown shattered his own school record in 3-meter diving on the first day of the Thomas Murphy Invitational Friday night at the Mangione Pool in the Fitness and Aquatics Center.

Brown led the Greyhounds to a sweep of the event, finishing with a score of 299.40 to better his previous school record of 275.03 from 2011. Teammates freshman Noel Theroux and sophomore Ryan Conley finished second and third, respectively. Theroux collected 276.00 points and Conley finished with 221.40.

Loyola also had three individuals and two relay teams claim victories tonight. Senior Caitlin Cronin won her second 50 free title of the season, touching first in 24.44, while Mixa won her second 1-meter diving event of the year. Mixa finished with 251.31 points, while classmate Victoria Arturi was second (221.16) and freshman Kelsey Schlein was third with 203.02 points.

Freshman Becca Meyers rounded out the individual winners, claiming the 500 free with a time of 5:08.23. Senior Erin Calderoni touched third in 5:13.96. On the men’s side, freshman Aidan O’Hara completed the event in 4:47.38 to finish runner-up.

In the 50 free, junior Ruslan Kopunek was second in 21.23, while freshman Tara Mulligan was third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:14.44.


 

 

In relay events, the women’s 400 medley and 800 free relay teams were victorious. The quartet of sophomore Elizabeth McKenna, freshman Courtney Kenyon, senior Erin Shea and Cronin combined for a winning time of 3:57.09 in the 400 medley relay, while Shea and Cronin also teamed up with junior Brianna Keelan and junior Erin Calderoni to win the 800 free relay in 7:47.74.

On the men’s side, the 400 medley relay team of O’Hara, freshman Dale Maholage, sophomore Rich Mueller and Kopunek combined for a time of 3:34.04 and a second-place finish.

O’Hara, junior Brendan McGann, sophomore Jack Bair and senior Bryan Bedacht rounded out the day’s events by combining for a third-place finish in the 800 free relay with a time of 7:16.09.

As a team, Loyola's women lead Johns Hopkins, 77-30, Marywood, 93-17, and Saint Francis (Pa.), 78-29, while the men lead Marywood, 86-24, but trail Johns Hopkins, 70-37.

The Greyhounds will return to the pool tomorrow for two sessions. The first will begin at 10 a.m, with the second beginning at 3 p.m.
