Five Greyhounds Win Events In Pool Vs. Lafayette, Drexel And Seton Hall

BALTIMORE - Senior Brennan Morris earned nine individual first-place finishes, while junior Caitlin Cronin had six, as the duo led the Loyola University Maryland men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams to four combined wins over Drexel, Lafayette and Seton Hall Saturday afternoon at Mangione Pool.
In a close battle with Seton Hall, Loyola’s men’s 400-yard freestyle relay team of freshman Madison Hardimon, senior Ryan Shovlin, sophomore Robert Walker and senior Ryan Shea anchored the squad to an exciting finish, beating the Pirates to the wall and finishing second overall in the final event to give the Greyhounds a narrow 147-141 victory.
The Greyhound men also beat Lafayette, 172-122, while they were edged out by Drexel, 170-118.
On the women’s side, Cronin swept the 100 free (53.48) and the 200 free (1:54.77) and finished third overall in the 50 free (24.76) to lead the Greyhounds to a 174-120 win over Drexel and a 169-130 victory against Lafayette. Loyola was unable to come up with the sweep though, as Seton Hall earned a 182-116 win over the Greyhounds.
Morris won the 200 IM, 500 free and 1000 free to claim nine first-place finishes against the three schools. He touched first in the 200 IM in 1:55.25, the 1000 free in 9:36.34 and won his 13th-straight 500 free race with a time of 4:42.60.
The men’s team dominated the 50 free with senior Jeffrey Rowe touching first in 21.69. Freshman Nigel Hunter then edged Shea out of second place by .03 seconds. Hunter finished in 21.80, while Shea earned a time of 21.83.
Shea had an individual victory on the day though, as he claimed top honors in the 100 free, touching in 47.55.
Freshman Lizzie McKenna also won an event, the first of her young career, finishing first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.00. She also took third overall in the 200 back with a time of 2:10.57.
Throughout the day, runner-up honors belonged to freshman Timmy Barry, junior Bryan Bedacht, sophomore Erin Calderoni, junior Elle Mixa, Rowe and Shovlin. Barry touched second in the 200 back in 1:58.11 and also earned a third-place finish in the 100 back (53.62.).
Bedacht was second to Morris in the 1000 free (9:52.29), while Calderoni was second on the women’s side in 10:51.15. In the fly events, Rowe was second in the 100 fly (52.41) and Shovlin was second in the 200 fly (1:57.16).
In 1-meter diving, Mixa finished second with a score of 234.25.
Other top finishers include junior Courtney Chenet, who earned a pair of third-place finishes in the 100 breast (1:10.53) and the 200 back (2:31.89), Hardimon, freshmen Allie Krasnov and junior Erin Shea.
Hardimon was third in the 200 free, touching in 1:45.93, Krasnov was third in the 1000 free (10:59.22) and Shea was third in the 100 free (54.58).
Loyola will return to action next weekend when it hosts Johns Hopkins, Marywood and Saint Francis (Pa.) in the annual two-day Thomas Murphy Invitational. Events will take place on Friday, Nov. 2, beginning at 5 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 3 at 10 a.m., and 3 p.m.
