Turcinov Named MAAC Swimmer of the Year as Men and Women Take Third at MAAC's
Feb. 21, 2004
BALTIMORE, MD - Loyola junior Marko Turcinov was named the 2004 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Male Swimmer of the Year and the Greyhound men's and women's swimming and diving teams secured third-place finishes on Saturday, the third and final day, at the 2004 MAAC Championships held at Loyola's Fitness and Aquatic Center (FAC).
Turcinov's award capped off a brilliant weekend for the star junior as he reeled in three gold medals and was a member of three medal-winning relay teams. On Day One, Turcinov took first in the 200 IM while tying a MAAC record with his time of 1:51.39 as he led Loyola's 200 medley relay team to a surprising second-place finish. Turcinov grabbed the 100 Fly MAAC title and also led the 'Hounds' 200 Free Relay to a third-place finish on Day Two, which set the stage for his possible run at the Swimmer of the Year Award on Saturday. The junior from suburban Cleveland was able to realize one of the goals he set for himself -- to win MAAC Swimmer of the Year -- at the start of the season when he set a new MAAC record in the 200 Fly with his time of 1:50.13. He also guided his 400 Free Relay squad to a bronze medal on the final day at MAAC's.
This award didn't come easily to Turcinov as a major challenge arose from Marist distance swimmer Nick Chevalier, who also won three events. However, the record-breaking fashion in which Turcinov won two of his three gold medals earned the Loyola star Swimmer of the Year honors.
Turcinov, in just three years, already holds two MAAC records as he set the 100 Fly record at last year's championships to go with the 200 Fly record he set on Saturday.
Including the two medals that Turcinov helped win for Loyola, the Greyhound men and women combined to win 10 medals on the day. Other 'Hounds receiving hardware for their exceptional performances were Megan Sterback (5th - 3-meter diving), Dan Casey (5th - 1-meter diving), Chris Berger (5th - 1650 Free), Chelsea Brace (5th - 200 Back), Ryan Reeser (4th - 100 Free), Nori Skoda (3rd - 200 Breast), Lisa Davey (4th - 200 Breast), the women's 400 Free Relay team of Jennie Zohorsky, Shannon Mahon, Melissa Birkenmeier, and Jayme Adams (3rd - 3:39.65) and the men's 400 Free Relay team of Turcinov, Kyle Klimas, Chris Berger, and Ryan Reeser (3rd - 3:09.52).
Rider won the men's meet with a total of 877 points, Marist finished second with 868, Loyola third with 502, Iona fourth with 443, Fairfield fifth with 371, Niagara sixth with 243, St. Peter's seventh with 202, and Canisius eighth with 96 points.
Marist's women won the team title with 820.50 points, Rider finished second with 741, Loyola third with 561, Siena fourth with 354.50, Iona and Fairfield tied for fifth with 345, Niagara took sixth with 231, Canisius grabbed eighth with 154, Manhattan nabbed ninth with 113, and St. Peter's placed 10th with 106.
Loyola's men's team completes the season with the third place MAAC finish and an 8-5 regular season record while the women's team completes the season with their third-place league finish and a 10-5 regular season record.
The Greyhound men have now captured two consecutive team bronze medals, while Loyola's women's team returns to the top three in the MAAC after its brief hiatus from that group last year. With the Greyhound women's third place finish on Saturday, Head Coach Brian Loeffler, in his 13th year at the helm of the program, has now led his women's squads to third-place in the MAAC or better 12 out of 13 years.
