Rider Men, Marist Women Lead After Day One At MAAC Championships

Baltimore, Md. - The Rider University men's team and Marist's women's team are in first place after Day One of the 2005 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Swimming and Diving Championships, which are being held at Loyola College's Fitness and Aquatic Center (FAC) from February 17th through February 19th.

The defending MAAC Champ Broncs scored 222 points to jump out to a 22-point lead on Marist (200) as Loyola sits in third place with 145 points.

On the women's side, Marist holds a narrow 212-205 advantage over Rider while the host Greyhounds are in third place with 158 points.

Thursday's events were highlighted by five new MAAC records. Loyola senior Marko Turcinov broke his own 200 IM MAAC and pool record that he set last year as he cruised to a time of 1:50.78. Marist junior diver Meghan Duffy also set a new conference mark and pool record with her score of 246.90 in the one-meter diving finals.

Rider's Courtney Clark recorded a MAAC record as she rolled to a more than nine-second victory in the 500 Free with a time of 5:00.02 to break a 17 year-old record, previously held by LaSalle's Barbara Leutner. Red Foxes freshman Jamie Falco broke a 16 year-old league record in the 200 IM with her time of 2:07.49. The Marist 400-yard Medley Relay team was the final record-breaker of the day as the quartet of Falco, Lauren Malski, Whitney Butler, and Kim Koehler swam to a time of 3:55.97.

Day Two and Session Three of the MAAC Championships are scheduled to begin on Friday morning at 10 a.m. with Session Four scheduled for Friday at 5:30 p.m.
