Baltimore, Md. - Loyola Crew Coach Al Ramirez has named Cherith Greenwood assistant men's and women's rowing coach. Greenwood, who served as assistant coach at Vasser College for the past two seasons, replaces longtime Loyola assistant Tony Buchman.

"I am grateful and delighted to have the opportunity to hire such an enthusiastic and experienced young coach," says Coach Ramirez. "This is a critical step for our program and the creation of this position will definitely accelerate our development and success on all fronts. We had so many talented, well-educated, and skilled applicants for the job, and Cherith's experience, attitude and high-energy personality set her apart even in the top pool of fantastic applicants."

Last summer Greenwood helped coach the Junior Men's Under-19 team out of Thompson's Boat Club in Washington, DC where the Junior A Men's 8+ and 4+ won the 2006 US National Championship.

Prior to her experience at Vassar, Greenwood spent a year in Oklahoma as the graduate assistant rowing coach at Oklahoma City University.

Greenwood attended Northeastern University on a full scholarship and graduated in 2004 with a B.A. in journalism. During her time at NU, she was awarded "Most Competitive Novice" as a freshman, and her JV boat was awarded "Most Inspirational Varsity" during her third year. During her fifth year at Northeastern, Cherith helped coach the novice team as an undergraduate assistant.

"She has an extensive and successful background as a rower in very strong high school and college programs," added Ramirez. "We hope to raise the Greyhound program to new levels of competitiveness with her expertise in recruiting and skill instruction. She has also spent valuable time "in the trenches", and proven her ability to coach effectively in a small college environment . These skills will be essential to the development of our program. We are very excited to start the year."

A native of Niagara Falls, Canada, Greenwood began her rowing career at South Niagara in a Learn-To-Row program at 11 years of age. A year later she joined the St. Catharines Rowing Club in Canada, home of the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta and 1999 World Rowing Championships, where she started her competitive rowing career. Cherith has won the Head of the Charles in the Youth 8+, Canadian Henley in the Sr. B 8+, and US National titles. She has also been awarded Junior Oarswoman of the Year in 1999 from the St. Catharine's Rowing Club. Greenwood also began coaching at the highly successful St. Catharine's Rowing Club with the junior programs and the Learn-to-Row programs.
