Moller, Mulieri Receive Lagna, Mohler Awards At Loyola Athletics' Awards Banquet
April 27, 2009
Loyola College in Maryland seniors Sarra Moller and Michael Mulieri were the 2009 recipients of the Ernest Lagna and John R. Mohler Awards, respectively, as the top female and male student-athletes who excel in athletics, scholarship and character.
The awards were presented at the 2009 Loyola Athletic Awards Banquet Monday night in McGuire Hall on the Evergreen Campus.
Moller, a four-year letterwinner and two-time team captain of the women’s soccer team, helped lead the women’s soccer team to a 29-1-6 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season record during her tenure as a Greyhound. She was a four-time All-MAAC First Team honoree and earned MAAC Defensive Player of the Year honors twice.
Fresh off his second-straight MAAC individual medalist title at the 2009 conference championships, Mulieri was recognized as the Mohler Award winner. Mulieri helped the Greyhounds win two consecutive MAAC team titles in 2008 and 2009 while taking top individual honors both years. He was the 2008 MAAC Student-Athlete of the Year and is a member of Loyola’s Green and Grey Society, a prestigious group of student leaders on campus.
In addition to the awards handed out to Greyhound student-athletes, the Department of Athletics honored Joe Boylan with the 2009 Diane Geppi-Aikens Inspiration Award. Named for the late Loyola women’s lacrosse coach whose passion for, and care of, Loyola student-athletes was legendary, the award is given yearly to an individual who exhibits dedication and has overcome adversity.
For the last 18 years, Boylan has been a tireless advocate for Loyola athletics and its student-athletes. His work on campus, in Baltimore and nationally has helped the College further its athletic endeavors, and his devotion to Jesuit ideals and commitment to the pursuit of excellence has inspired many on campus whether they have been involved with athletics or not.
The Athletics Department gave out several other awards at the event.
Amanda Piccirilli and Jimmy Daly were recipients of the Rev. Francis J. McManamin Unsung Hero Awards. Piccirilli was a two-year women’s soccer captain whose leadership was always evident in her actions and words. Daly has led the men’s lacrosse team as a senior captain this season as one of the hardest working players in the program.
Mary Clare Taylor and Devin Marsicovetere received the Leadership Awards. A unanimous selection as team captain by her women’s lacrosse teammates, Taylor has been described by her coach as having a ‘magnetic personality and is someone everyone on the team trusts and is drawn to.’ Marsicovetere was lauded for his coolness under pressure in tight competitions and has helped improve the men’s crew program each of his four seasons at Loyola.
Lea Day and Milos Kocic were awarded the department’s Medals of Merit. Day will graduate with a near-perfect grade point average as a business administration major and has been an All-MAAC performer for the women’s soccer team. Kocic graduated early with an international business degree after earning All-America honors for the men’s soccer team. He was a second round draft pick of Major League Soccer’s D.C. United and recently began his professional career.
The women’s soccer team was recognized for having the highest cumulative team grade point average of all Loyola squads. Day and men’s golfer Michael O’Keefe were honored for having the highest GPAs of senior student-athletes.
Men’s basketball manager Will McBride was the recipient of the Student Service Award for his contributions and dedication to the program and the athletic department.
