Women's Varsity and Novice Eights Take Silvers At Frostbite Regatta
Nov. 15, 2004
Philadelphia, Pa. - Loyola's women's varsity eight and novice eight boats both grabbed silver medals despite viscious conditions on Saturday afternoon at the Frostbite Regatta held on the Schuylkill River.
The Greyhound women's varsity eight finished in second place, just five seconds behind the winner, Temple. Loyola, which clocked a time of 5:03.60, defeated third place Georgetown by six seconds as it experimented with sprint stroke speeds according to Head Coach Al Ramirez.
"We pushed hard to raise the stroke rate to sprint speeds with mixed results," said Ramirez. "Although some felt it was too high too soon, the boat still managed a great finish."
The women's novice eight, which rowed a time of 5:25.94, fell only to Saint Joseph's (5:18.65), while it beat Lehigh, Temple and Penn State.
Loyola's men's varisty four and novice eight boats each earned third place finishes. The varsity four race was extremely tight with Loyola (4:56.98) falling to the winner, LaSalle, by .88 seconds, and second-place finisher, Ithaca, by .86 seconds.
The Greyhound novice eight (5:04.93) finished third, 19 seconds behind first and second place finishers, Colgate and Lehigh, respectively.
Loyola took fourth in the women's novice four race with a time of 6:37.23, fourth in the men's novice four race with a time of 6:03.36, fourth in the women's novice eight race with a time of 5:52.51, fourth in the men's novice eight race with a time of 5:27.55, fifth in the women's four race with a time of 5:28.68, and fifth in the men's varsity eight race with a time of 4:33.87.
