Five Crews Medal At The Frostbite Regatta
Nov. 9, 2013
CHERRY HILL, N.J. - The Loyola University Maryland rowing teams competed in eight events Saturday afternoon at the Frostbite Regatta.
Five crews medaled in the day’s events, highlighted by a first-place finish by the men’s freshmen novice four. Theodore Fortier, Robert Moore, Chris Hartford, Craig MacAdams and rookie coxswain Bryton Suter crossed the finish line in 7:25. The Greyhounds finished ahead of University of Maryland, Rutgers Camden and Stony Brook.
“Today’s freshmen four showed an encouraging start as we have another three years to work with this crew, whether they continue to help the varsity eight or start building a light eight,” Head Coach Al Ramirez said.
The women’s novice four debuted as the first female entry of the year for Loyola. Stroke Alyssa Villani, Kate Spence, Carly McMahon and Maggie Rabenberg competed in the first collegiate race of their careers.
“The freshmen exceeded race expectations by rowing cleanly and at a higher stroke rate than expected as a rookie crew,” Ramirez said.
The women added to Loyola’s medal count, taking third among five crews. The Greyhounds finished ahead of Scranton and SUNY Maritime, with a time of 9:22.21.
The fifth and final medal of the day came by the way of the men’s open four. Coxed by Patrick Flynn, Joe Wawrzynki, Craig Spicer, Bryan Carney and Filip Zigic finished second behind Temple University. The Owls took the early lead, but the Greyhounds maintained a strong second, levying the other three race entrants far behind. Despite a fast start and a fast finish, Loyola struggled to keep a constant speed through the middle 1,000 of the race. The men crossed the finish line with a time of 7:00.51.
A pair of fourth-place finishes in the men’s lightweight four and men’s varsity eight rounded out the competition for Loyola.
The lightweight four tested a new lineup in Walter Horan, Carpenter, Blume, James McCarron and Amanda Adsit. The crew got off to a quick start in the first 850, but found it difficult to maintain the pace throughout the remainder of the race. The Greyhounds ultimately clocked a time of 7:22.51, finishing ahead of SUNY Maritime.
In Loyola’s final race of the day, the men’s varsity eight finished less than five seconds behind the third-place finisher, Washington College, with a time of 6:28.45.
“The men launched into strong cross-tail wind, but the wind died just before the race,” Ramirez said. “After drilling during the warm-up to eliminate technical issues visible during the fours races, the men lined up and had a very positive and very solid piece.”
The Greyhounds stay on the same course for the Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta tomorrow in Cherry Hill, N.J. Click here to view full results of the Frostbite Regatta.
