Rowing Shows Good Performances At Head Of The Occoquan
FAIRFAX STATION, Va. - Loyola University Maryland rowing teams had a solid day of racing Saturday at the Head of the Occoquan Regatta in Northern Virginia.
"From last week and this week combined, the team showed that we can produce this speed consistently," said Head Coach Megan Patrick. "This is our base, and we can build from here. Throughout the day, some boats showed flashes of the next level, which shows we are on track to take the next steps."
The Greyhounds' men's varsity four -- Sean Mollahan, Peter McGuigan, Ryan Brown, JP Dougherty and coxswain Gianni Feliciano -- rowed a strong race, finishing in 18:47.76 to edge boats from Carnegie Mellon and New York Maritime by just over two seconds. Loyola's entry 11th out of 27 entries
Loyola's men's varsity eight -- Gabe Rubio, Dougherty, Brown, McGuigan, Mollahan, Ramiro Morales, Christopher Kaloudis, Paul Tomaszenski and coxswain Zachary Pepper -- finished ninth out of 19 entries, crossing the line in 17:18.22.
The Greyhounds had two entries in the women's varsity eights with the top boat -- Maureen Frauenheim, Janae Banner, Maggie Knies, Amanda Merlino, Katherine Fletcher, Natasha Murray, Mia Gioia and coxswain Keenan Gibbons -- placing 13th out of 24 in 19:45.61.
Loyola's second entry in the women's varsity eight -- Rhys Schueren, Gabrielle Teoli, Natasha Lobo, Emily Mansour, Emma Jantzen, Bailey Jaronski, Meghan Reilly, Adelina Latinsky-Ortiz and coxswain Sarah Ng -- cruised to a time of 20:46.70 to finish 20th.
"Our highlights of the day included the way the men's 4+ attacked the race and Sarah Ng's well-steered course in the women's 2V8," Patrick said.
Loyola will be back in action next weekend with its final races of its fall schedule. The Greyhounds will race on both Saturday and Sunday, November 11 and 12, at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey. Loyola will first compete in the Frostbite Regatta on Saturday and the Bill Braxton Regatta Sunday.
