Rowing Races At Head Of The Occoquan
Nov. 4, 2012
FAIRFAX STATION, Va. - The Loyola University Maryland men's and women's rowing teams raced Saturday at the Head of the Occoquan in Northern Virginia where the Greyhounds turned in some of their best results of the young season.
The men's varsity 8 with stroke Jordan Mastera, Joe Wawrzynski, Walter Horan, Craig Spicer, Filip Zigic, Michael Blume, Brendan Burke, Bryan Carney and coxswain Patrick Flynn came in seventh out of 16 boats, finishing in 16:51.08.
"It was obvious in the men's faces that they had experienced a breakthrough effort," Head Coach Al Ramirez said. "After the race, they were not only surprised but very pleased with improvements made to the rhythm and timing of the boat as well as the technical racing."
Loyola's women's varsity 8 crew -- coxswain Lindsay Superczynski, stroke Andrea Almeida, Clara Coleman, Kathleen Sweeney, Eleni Papdatos, Theresa Cornell, Kimberly Seckler, Kelly Gregitis, and Kimberly Chambers -- also had a solid performance, placing 18th out of 34 teams in stiff competition.
The men's varsity 4 with Horan as the stroke, Spicer, Paul Kalkbrenner, Juan Cadavid and coxswain Andrew Krygier, showed an improvement over last week's competition, defeating boats from five schools. Loyola's lightweight 4 -- flynn (coxswain), stroke Christopher Carpenter, Burke, Carney and Michael Skopelitis -- came in eighth in their event.
The Greyhounds had two boats in the women's varsity 4 race, with Almeida, Coleman, Gregitis and Papdatos finished a solid 13th out of 31 boats, while Loyola's other boat of Kathleen Connolly, Shannon Connelly, Kathleen Varello and Anna Bellerive took 22nd.
Loyola wraps up its fall competition next weekend with the Frostbite Regatta on the Cooper River in New Jersey.
