Crew Battles Tough Weather Conditions On The Schuykill
Oct. 30, 2011
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Through driving rain, ice and snow, the Loyola University Maryland men's and women's crew teams battled the elements on Saturday at the Head of the Schuykill Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa.
Due to the weather conditions, many races were canceled or delayed, leading to only two Greyhound boats getting in the water.
"The Schuykill dealt us tough weather conditions," said Head Coach Al Ramirez. "It left competitors shivering, wet and numb - not great for high-performance rowing."
Chris Golon entered the men's open light single, a category raced by people training at the pre-elite level on Philadelphia's historic boathouse row. Golon became the first Loyola undergrad to race in the single open competition and finished 15th with a time of 18:03.91.
Golon had a gritty performance, fighting through the race despite having trouble feeling the oars through numb hands. The difficulties of controlling the blades' clean release from the choppy water in the tiny shell caused a near flip with about 600 meters left, but his experience training in the 1x shell over the past two years allowed him to finish without a disaster.
Ramirez reshuffled the women's open four boat the competed at the Head of the Charles last weekend, inserting experienced freshman Andrea Almeida into the boat. To accommodate the lineup change Julie Rocuzzo stroked the boat from the starboard side rather than the port side.
Another newcomer to the boat was former rower-turned-coxswain Olivia Duckworth, who debuted at the position on the Schuylkill after years of racing in lightweight rowing seats.
The boat finished 25th of 38 teams, crossing the finish line in 17:30.4
Alumna and former IRA and MAAC champion, Liz Staub '10, had a fine race in the open lightweight single while racing for Undine Barge Club of Philadelphia. She secured 6th behind a group of excellent scullers from Vesper BC, Penn AC, and an international from Australia's Sydney Boat Club. Staub finished a mere 6% of the winning time, finishing in 17:27.41
The Greyhounds hope to get some more boats in the water on the Schuykill on Sunday as long as weather conditions hold.
