The Rowing Team Posts A Strong Showing In Philadelphia
Oct. 28, 2012
PHILADELPHIA, Penn. - The Loyola University Maryland crew teams raced in six events with eight boats on Saturday, at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia, Penn.
The men’s open fours took to the water first. The Loyola “B-lightweight” boat of cox Patrick Flynn, stroke Christopher Carpenter, Brendan Burke, Bryan Carney, and Michael Skopelitis finished 32nd with a time of 16:19. The “A” boat of coxswain Andrew Krygier, Craig Spicer, Paul Kalkbrenner, Juan Cadavid, and stroke Walter Horan finished 34th, only twelve seconds behind the "B" boat.
The Greyhounds also raced two women’s open four boats, placing 29th and 30th respectively. The “A” boat’s coxswain Lindsay Superczynski, stroke Kathleen Sweeney, Eleni Papadatos, Kelly Gregitis, and Kimberly Seckler recorded a time of 17:44. The “B” boat, comprised of cox Olivia Camusi, Shannon Connelly, Kathleen Varello, Anna Bellerive, and stroke seat Theresa Cornell, was right on their tails with a time of 17:50.
“The men’s and women’s four groups did a good job in a tough category,” said Head Coach Al Ramirez. “Our crews were comprised of largely young athletes and new rowers, but it was good to see what they were capable of in somewhat sensitive boats.”
The men’s eight consisted of seven sophomores and one senior. Stroke Jordan Mastera and Joe Wawrzynski led the second year newcomers, Horan, Spicer, Filip Zigic, Michael Blume, Burke, Carney , and cox Pat Flynn to an 18th place finish.
The women’s eight boat was also filled with youth, but made up in experience, as they all rowed in high school. The eight boat team consisted of coxswain Lindsay Superczynski, stroke Andrea Almeida, Clara Coleman, Sweeney, Papdatos, Cornell, Seckler, Gregitis, and Kimberly Chambers. Loyola finished 21st in the women’s club eights.
The Greyhounds entered a men and women’s doubles boat at the Regatta. The men were the fastest of any college competing in the category. The team finished in 16:31, good enough for eighth place. The women’s doubles boat of Almeida and Coleman finished in the top ten. The pair recorded a time of 18:16, and finished in ninth place.
The Loyola rowing team will be back in the water Nov. 3, in Fairfax Station, Va., for the Occaquan Regatta.
