Women's Varsity Four Takes 17th At The Head Of Charles
Oct. 23, 2010
BOSTON, Mass. - The Loyola University Maryland women's rowing team provided an impressive showing in its first fall contest, as the Varsity Four took 17th at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta on Saturday afternoon.
Lauren Walsh coxed the boat with crew members Kimberly Winiarczyk, Leslie Ann Perez, Julianne Roccuzzo and Andrea Hartman and the four finished the course with a time of 21:02.263. The boat finished 17th out of a 52-team field.
"The girls are really happy with their performace, and their finish guarantees us an entry in this category next year," said Head Coach Al Ramirez. "They were fighting in a pretty solid pack for awhile and they had a couple of challenges that they did a good job of holding off."
Loyola finished as the fifth university team behind St. Mary's, Villanova, Boston College and Fordham. The squad finished only 1.5 seconds behind St. Mary's and led through most of the race before a hard charge from St. Mary's overtook the Greyhounds on the final stretch.
Walsh made her varsity debut as a coxswain, which involved steering the boat under several bridges and curves through the challenging three-mile Charles River course.
"The girls did a bang-up job with only one practice on the course yesterday," Ramirez said. "Avoiding any penalties in such a tight, competitive race shows how prepared and ready Lauren and the girls were for the race."
The Varsity Four passed Bair Island Rowing Club and held off a furious comeback attempt through the last mile.
"Walsh did a fantastic job of nailing the difficult series of turns in the last half-mile through bridges and around a difficult and strategic final turn," said Ramirez. "She kept her cool even in the heat of heated verbal exchanges to keep us on top."
The Greyhounds also beat out conference foes Fairfield and Iona as well as crews from Holy Cross, Army, Trinity and Tufts.
