Men's Rowing Opens The Fall Season At Navy Day Regatta
Oct. 12, 2013
PHILADELPHIA - The Loyola University Maryland men's rowing team made an impressive showing in its first appearance of the fall season, as the men's lightweight four took 4th at the Navy Day Regatta on Saturday afternoon.
With the Greyhounds' best finish of the day, Walter Horan, Rob Moore, Craig MacAdams, Teddy Fortier and cox Amanda Adsit, crossed the course finish line with a time of 14:26.39. Loyola finished behind Pennsylvania and Franklin.
"In a boat class that is relatively unforgiving, I thought the men showed a lot of improvement in terms of consistent technique over the length of the 4k race," said Head Coach Al Ramirez. "The crew felt solid about the ratio and rhythm, and reported consistent power for the length of the course."
The varsity four outraced lineups from Rutgers, Villanova, West Point, Lehigh, La Salle and Hofstra Saturday afternoon.
In the 19th race of the day, a duo of pair boats finished 9th and 10th. Michael Blume and Devon Hamilton narrowly beat the team of James McCarron and Christopher Carpenter by 20 seconds. Blume and Hamilton recorded a time of 15:57.33, while McCarron and Carpenter came in at 16:18. 24.
"The doubles is a category I would like to see us race more often and with more skill," Ramirez said. " The guys did a great job of being confident and getting out of their comfort zone. In each boat I paired a novice with an experience sculling mentor and let them run with a couple key technical points to focus on."
The recently christened, " Robert W. Brown, P'07", made the grand finale for the Greyhounds, as the men's eight finished 23rd with a time of 13:04.60. The Greyhounds beat Scranton, Franklin, The Haverford School, University of Pennsylvania, Drexel, and A10 competitors La Salle and St. Joseph's.
Loyola had not raced the eight at Navy Day Regatta since 2009.
"It was nice to see this young, very light group hang with the pack and duel a Rutgers eight almost the full length of the course with power and fairly consistent rhythm," Ramirez said.
Loyola returns to the water on Saturday, Oct. 26, for the Head of the Schuylkill in Philadelphia.
