PHILADELPHIA, PA - Loyola's rowing program got its season off to a solid start Saturday afternoon as a number of Greyhound boats kicked off the 2003-2004 rowing year at Philadelphia's Navy Day Regatta held on the Schuylkill River's 4,000-meter course.

Taking to the waters first for head coach Al Ramirez's squad was the men's varsity 4 A-boat that was stroked by junior Will Farrell, who led the vessel to a 14th-place finish in a time of 16:54.60. Today's race was the first action for Farrell since teaming with Mike Ferguson, who has now graduated, last Spring to record a 6th-place finish in the men's varsity pair at the IRA meet, which is the unofficial NCAA men's crew national championship.

The men's varsity 4 B-boat finished 15th in a time of 16:54.6 while competing against older and larger crews from the Mid-Atlantic region.

Later in the day, the men's varsity 8 recorded a sixth place finish with a time of 14:45 as Loyola beat two University of Delaware boast that the Greyhounds haven't defeated in two years.

Loyola's women's lightweight 4 took 12th place, registering a time of 17:29, as they were forced to row in the heavyweight class while the Greyhounds' varsity 4 crossed the finish line in 17:58 to finish sixth.

The women's varisity 8 posted Loyola's best finish of the day as they took third in 15:49.40, racing past a solid Army boat and just barely losing to an accomplished Temple crew.
