Rowing Opens Competition at IRA National Championships
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - Loyola University’s Maryland’s men’s varsity four boat races twice on Friday, opening the Greyhounds competition at the IRA National Championships on Mercer Lake.
A strong race in the repechage heat pushed the Greyhounds across the finish line in 7:07.08. Patrick Flynn coxed the boat with Robert Moore in the bow, Ryan Brown and Victor Santiago in seats two and three and John Dougherty in the stroke seat.
The varsity four boat stroked a strong tempo in the opening 1,500 meters and had an edge on Drexel University’s entry, but the Dragons came back in the final 400 meters to finish less than six seconds ahead of the Greyhounds.
Loyola will race against crews from Fairfield University, the University of Oklahoma and Santa Clara University on Saturday in a heat scheduled to start just after 11 a.m.
A duo of Loyola rowers will race in the women’s pairs competition starting at 9:10 a.m. Saturday. Corinne Conyngham and Megan Rabenberg will compete against boats from Boston University, Stanford University and Radcliffe College.
