Crews Compete At Championships Friday
SHREWSBURY, Mass. - The Loyola University Maryland crew teams split up Friday morning to compete at a pair of championships in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. The women’s team traveled to Lake Quinsigamond in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, to race at the Patriot League Championship, while the men’s team set off for the Dad Vail Regatta on the east bank of the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
Lauren Howe, Megan Rabenberg, Natasha Murray, Meaghan Kaiser, Lilly Lane, Emily Mansour, Corinne Conyngham, Keenan Gibbons and coxswain Serena Rivera opened competition early in the morning at the League championship, taking fifth in the first heat of varsity eight races. The Greyhounds came across the finish line in 7:46.46 and went on to take third in the “B” finals with a time of 8:17.98.
The second varsity eight crew (Natasha Lobo, Rhys Schueren, Aubrey Lewis, Kristyn Rooney, Mia Gioia, Nona Sharp, Glennith Capone, Samara Vallieres and cox Tara Villaruel) also took fifth in their respective heat with a time of 8:26.77. The boat advanced to the “B” Finals and finished third behind Holy Cross and Lehigh with a time of 8:53.59.
Navy won the Patriot League Championship with 49 points, just one point ahead of Boston University, a team that took second with 48 points. Bucknell, the 2016 preseason favorite, finished third with 44 points, while MIT and Georgetown rounded out the top five with 35 and 33 points, respectively. Holy Cross picked up 23 points, while Colgate (17), Lehigh (13) and Loyola (5) rounded out the team scoring.
Farther south in Philadelphia, Victor Santiago, Joseph Yacobucci, Ryan Brown, Ryan Scott, David Dukenik, Robert Moore, John Dougherty, Liam Marmo and coxswain Patrick Flynn took third in the sixth heat of the men’s varsity heavyweight eight race. The Greyhounds crossed the finish line in 6:20.42 and later went on to race for a spot in Saturday’s semifinals. The varsity crew narrowly missed the cut and finished third behind Bucknell and U. Mass – Lowell with a time of 6:32.42.
Novice rowers Jacob Landis, Nick Trautwein, Ryan Elliott, Chris Rynne, Kunle’ Soniregun, Erik Magnuson, Andrew Ramirez, Daniel Lecce and cox Mike Russo came in fifth in the first heat of the men’s freshmen eight. The crew clocked a final race time of 6:57.56.
