WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - The Loyola University Maryland men’s and women’s rowing teams concluded competition at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J.

The men’s team placed fifth, totaling 72 points on the day, while Marist took home the team title.

Jordan Mastera and Ryan Walsh highlighted competition for the Greyhounds, placing second in the men’s pair with a time of 7:34.3 to register eight points.

“We were happy with the men’s and women’s varsity pairs,” said head coach Al Ramirez. “They did a great job with minimal practice time together. Jordan Mastera and Ryan Walsh put together a great race to get second. Margaret Ajello and Kathleen Sweeney were equally as good while fighting off a strong Iona crew on the women’s side.”

The men’s varsity four of Thomas Quinn, Christopher Golon, Walsh, Mastera and Joe Wawrzynski took fifth in their race, finishing in 7:00.3.

The Greyhounds gained some valuable experience for their novices, who raced in their first ever MAAC Championship. The men’s novice eight of Walter Horan, Cooper Davis, Craig Spicer, Michael Blume, Bryan Carney, Juan Cadavid, Brendan Burke, Filip Zigic and Andrew Krygier, took fourth in its race to total 18 points.  The novice four also notched fourth in 7:22.4 to claim seven points, with a crew that included Horan, Davis, Spicer, Carney and Krygier.

Other men’s boats included the lightweight four, which finished fourth, and the junior varsity four, which took fifth.

Drake claimed the team title on the women’s side, with the Greyhound women not eligible for the title due to squad size requirements.

The women raced strong despite the small squad size, and also took second in the pair. Margaret Ajello and Kathleen Sweeney navigated the course in 8:30.5.

The women’s varsity four, which claimed All-MAAC Honors, raced in the open four, placing second in their heat and fourth overall. The boat included Katherine Griffin, Catriona Miller, Andrea Almeida, Clara Coleman and Julianne Roccuzzo.

The women’s novice four picked-up third place in its race, finishing in 8:27.6. The boat included Kathleen McCarthy, Liz Murphy, Shannon Connelly, Kathleen Varello and Olivia Camusi. The novice eight claimed eighth in their first time rowing together. The crew was Almeida, Coleman, McCarthy, Murphy, Connelly, Varello, Abigail Thompson and Amanda Adsit.

“I was pleased with the effort the novice teams put out today in their first MAAC Championship,” commented Ramirez. “We hope to see them back to compete as better rowers next year. It wasn’t our best team performance because of our small roster size, but the individual race results were positive. We overcame a lot of obstacles against much larger teams. At the end of the day, we left with much better idea of what we need to do for the Dad Vail Championships in two weeks.”

The Greyhounds next compete at the Dad Vail Championships in Philadelphia, Pa., on May 11.
