PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Loyola University Maryland men’s and women’s crew teams turned in strong performances at the 46th annual Kerr Cup on Saturday, hosted by Drexel University on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa.

In their final tune-up before the MAAC Championships, the Greyhound women notched one win to go along with a pair of second-place finishes.

The pair of junior Kathleen Sweeney and freshman Clara Coleman took first in the women’s varsity pair with a time of 10:03.01, beating teams from Villanova and Drexel.

Both the varsity four and novice four boats qualified for the grand finals, where each took home second place for Loyola. The women’s varsity four of Katherine Griffin, Catriona Miller, Margaret Ajello, Andrea Almeida and Julianne Roccuzzo won their preliminary heat and then finish the final in 8:23.9, losing out only to Villanova. The boat beat teams from Drexel, Penn State and Brynn Mawr.

The women’s novice four of Kathleen McCarthy, Abigail Thompson, Shannon Connelly, Liz Murphy and Amanda Adsit also placed second in 9:27.6.

The men’s varsity four of Christopher Golon, Ryan Walsh, Joe Wawrzynski, Tom Kelly and Thomas Quinn finished fourth in their heat in 8:02.2.

The men’s novice eight took to the Schuylikill for the first time this season, making strong improvements while placing fourth in their heat. The boat included Walther Horan, Michael Blume, Filip Zigic, Craig Spicer, Juan Cadavid, Bryan Carney, Brendan Burke and Andrew Krygier.

The men’s pair of Walsh and Wawrzynski finished fifth in the final, coming in in 9:05.1

“The women had a strong regatta earning two second place finishes and a first place finish in the varsity pair,” said head coach Al Ramirez. “The men earned a trip to the finals and battled some fatigue and injuries to finish fourth with a different lineup. I was also happy with the performance of the novice eight who continued to improve.”

The Greyhounds are next at the MAAC Championships on April 28 on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J.
