April 7, 2014

FAIRFAX, Va. - The men's varsity four finished first in the third flight on Sunday to guide the Loyola University Maryland rowing teams to a strong showing at the Occoquan Sprints at Sandy Run Park.

The men's varsity four crossed the finish line in 7:07.97, out-racing crews from Susquehanna University, UMBC, James Madison and North Carolina-Wilmington.

For the first time this season teammates Craig Spicer and Craig MacAdams competed in the men's pair, taking second in 8:02.81.

Coming off a strong performance last weekend at the Murphy Cup, the lightweight four of Emily Arcese, Walter HoranCraig MacAdamsTheodore Fortier and Robert Moore finished third in 7:05.59. The Greyhounds came in ahead of crews from William and Mary, Liberty and VCU.

The men's varsity eight improved on its finish from last week, taking third with a time of 6:24.54. The crew shaved off over a minute from last Saturday's race.

Like the men, the women's varsity eight also made great strides over the week.

"As true novices, the main six have a lot to learn," said Head Coach Al Ramirez. "Racing the varsity category is a rather harsh learning environment. Today's conditions were clean and warm, encouraging the freshmen to relax more and improve their timing and rhythm."
