Varsity Four Boats Finish Second At Murphy Cup Regatta
March 24, 2012
PENNSAUKEN, N.J. - Loyola University Maryland men's and women's varsity four boats each notched second-place finishes at the highly-competitive Murphy Cup Regatta, held on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J., on Saturday.
The men's varsity four A-boat of coxswain Jordan Mastera, Ryan Walsh, Joe Wawrynski, Christopher Golon and Thomas Quinn had the fastest qualifying time at 7:48.69 to win their heat and qualify for the finals in the afternoon.
In the finals, the boat claimed second, coming in less than four second behind first-place Colgate with a time of 7:50.47.
"Overall it was a good race day," said head coach Al Ramirez. "The men's and women's fours showed a lot of potential and dominated their heats in a field with very good depth. The 'B' men's four and men's novice four showed big improvements over last week's training sessions as well."
The women's varsity four also won their heat. The boat of coxswain Catriona Miller, Margaret Ajello, Andrea Almeida, Julianne Roccuzzo and Katherine Griffin registered the second-fastest time in the qualifying rounds at 9:18.21.
The boat went on to finish second in the finals behind UMass, clocking in at 9:06.11.
"The women's varsity four showed a lot of veteran poise, as they had to deal with over an hour delay before their varsity eight race," commented Ramirez. "After finishing their varsity eight race, they had to quickly get back to the dock and switch into the four boat and were able to push UMass down the course."
In the second varsity eight races, Loyola's men' finished fifth with a time of 8:18.83, while the women took sixth at 8:40.58.
Loyola will be back in action next weekend when it heads to Fairfax, Va., for the Occoquan Sprints on Sunday.
