Crew Posts Solid Showing At Spring-Opening Jesuit Invitational

CAMDEN, NJ - Loyola's men's and women's rowing teams kicked off their spring racing season with a solid season-opening performance at the Jesuit Invitational held on the Cooper River in Camden, NJ on Saturday afternoon.
Solid performances were put out by the whole team in the 8's. The women's varsity-8 raced fairly well against winner, Boston College, but they started their final sprint 10 strokes too late and lost to an early sprinting Holy Cross squad.
The men's novice-8 finished out of third place by only 6.8 seconds as four of the novice-8 rowers then hopped in with the men's varsity-8 to compete in that race as well. A solid row by the men's varsity-8 was disguised by the sheer power and speed of the other crews.
The women's novice-8 suffered a bad "crab" in the final 200 meters of their race which stopped their boat and pulled them from third to fifth.
The men's second freshman-8, including all novice-4 rowers, finished fifth behind three Georgetown boats, which just shows the awesome depth of the Hoya program.
An unfortuante rigging mistake cost the men's varsity-4 and women's novice-4 heavily. The riggers for their shells were mixed up during pre-race assembly and rendered the boats essentially unrowable. The problem was not discovered until the novice women had already hit the water leaving the varsity men helpless.
Luckily, the problem was rectified just in time for the women's varsity-4 race. The women's varsity-4 turned in a great performance, racing long and fast enough to take third away from Boston College and St. Joe's. Georgetown won by 11 seconds, but the Hounds crossed the finish line behind second place Boston College "B" by only 1.4 seconds.
"Competing against powerhouses Georgetown, Holy Cross, and St. Joseph's was a great learning experience for our young squad," said Loyola Director of Rowing Al Ramirez. "We're looking forward to getting back on the water again and improving all of our performances at next week's Occoquan Sprints."
