COOPER RIVER, N.J. - The Loyola University Maryland rowing team opened the 2013 spring season at the Jesuit Invitational on the Cooper River. St. Joseph's University hosted a number of Jesuit school's Saturday afternoon, including fellow Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference competitors, Fairfield University, and Canisius College.

"Early season races are essentially training regattas for us," said head coach Al Ramirez. "It's important to not only get work done, but see how the rowers respond to tough situations in multiple events with a quick turnaround."

Despite early season jitters, the men's varsity four finished second behind the Georgetown crew with a time of 8:06.8. Joe Wawrzynski, Michael Blume, Walter Horan, and Bryan Carney finished ten seconds ahead of the Boston College crew, while the novice four of Juan Cadavid, Paul Kalkbrenner, James McCarron, and Michael Skopelitis finished in fourth with a time of 8:28.8.

The two varsity four boats combined to race in the varsity eight, where the Greyhounds came away with a fifth-place finish.

On the women's side the novice four had the best finish, coming in second behind the Fairfield Stags. The varsity four crossed the finish line at a time of 9:22.2. The varsity eight of Andrea Almeida, Eleni Papadatos , Shannon Connelly, Clara Coleman, Colleen Metzler, Ilsen Hernandez, Kathleen Sweeney, Kimberly Seckler, and cox Lindsay Superczynski finished in fifth with a time of 8:39.2.

The team gets a week to train and prepare, as they travel to the Murphy Cup Regatta in Cherry Hill, N.J. on Saturday, March 30.
