EMMITSBURG, Md – Loyola University Maryland men’s and women’s tennis wrapped up competition Sunday at the rain-shortened Mount St. Mary’s Invitational. All singles flights were played out, but doubles competition was reduced due to Saturday’s weather.
Matthew Beijan reached the ‘B’ Flight singles final with three victories in the opening rounds. He rallied from a deep first-set hole his quarterfinal match against Mount St. Mary’s David Wortkotter to win in a super-tiebreaker third. Wortkotter posted a 6-0 win in the opening frame, but Bejiam came back to win the second, 6-3, before taking the tiebreaker, 10-6, to move on to the semifinals.
There, the Loyola senior also came back from a first-set loss to beat Howard University’s Laguna Foster, Jr., 4-6, 6-4, (10-4). He was eventually topped by Morgan State University’s Lucas Krusinski, 6-2, 6-1, in the flight final.
Bejian’s teammate Kyle Gower reached the quarterfinal round of the flight, while Brett Shriver lost his opening match but advanced through two more rounds to play in the consolation final.
John Ferruzzi also made it through to a final round, advancing to the ‘C’ flight title match. He won a match by default in the opening round and then defeated a player from Howard,6-2, 4-6, (10-7), in the semifinal. The host school’s Chris Lindsey overcame Ferruzzi’s first set win in the championship round to win the flight, 4-6, 6-2, (10-4).
Matt Fitzmaurice beat teammate Colin Kanuch, 6-1, 6-2, in the opening round to advance to the ‘C’ semifinals where he stretched Lindsey to three sets before falling, 1-6, 6-0, (10-8). Kanuch went on to win the consolation final of the flight, topping teammate Connor Skelton, 6-1, 6-0, in the match.
Reid Burch won a pair of matches in the ‘A’ singles flight, topping an opponent from Howard, 6-0, 6-2, in the first round and Louis Tonon of Mount St. Mary’s, 6-1, 6-0, in the quarterfinals.
In doubles action, Tyler Blessing and Brian Hoffarth won two matches, including a 6-1 decision over Burch and C.J. Cash in the semifinals, to reach the ‘A’ doubles final. The championship match was not played, however, before the end of the event.
On the women’s side, Ania Krawiec won a ‘A’ flight consolation quarterfinals match against Mount St. Mary’s Kelly Smith, 6-4, 6-2, before dropping her consolation semifinals contest. Alexandria Agee was a ‘B’ flight first-round winner, 6-2, 6-1, over The Mount’s Erin Benefiel.
The Greyhounds wrap up their fall action next weekend in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where they will take part in the Patriot League Kickoff Tournament at Lehigh University.
