Oct. 26, 2005

BALTIMORE, Md. - Coming off a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference losses over the weekend, the Greyhounds conclude their three-match homestand on Wednesday night when they host the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore at Reitz Arena beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Now 6-17 on the season, the Greyhounds lost a four-game match to Manhattan on Saturday night before being swept by Saint Peter's on Sunday afternoon. The losses extended Loyola's home losing streak to four straight matches after winning the first three at Reitz Arena to start the season. The Greyhounds' last home victory came on September 29 against Morgan State.

Freshman setter Marcellee Williams was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week after recording 113 assists in the Greyhounds' three matches last week. In Loyola's five-game victory over Lafayette, she recorded 50 assists to help the Greyhounds win back-to-back matches for the first time this season. In the three matches, she recorded seven kills and a .222 hitting percentage. She also had a service ace, two solo blocks and three block assists. It was the first time a Greyhound has been honored by the conference this season.

Senior outside hitter Becky Corb has an outstanding chance of adding another milestone to her stellar career. Entering the match against the Lady Hawks, Corb needs just three digs to reach 1,000 for her career. Corb will become the second player to reach 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her career when she reaches the career mark, joining Shauna Lagatol, `99 on the exclusive list. Corb also needs five kills to reach 1,500 for her career.

With three kills against Saint Peter's on Sunday afternoon, sophomore Christina Greenup went over 500 kills for her college career. She now has 501 kills in 174 career games played for an average of 2.88 kills per game.

The Lady Hawks are 5-22 on the season after suffering a four-game loss to Howard University in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match on Tuesday night. Senior Nicole Wilson hit .355 and had a team-high 14 kills for UMES while libero Stephanie Braxton recorded a match-high 24 digs in a losing effort. Freshman Yael Rozner tallied 33 assists in the loss, which was UMES' sixth in the last seven matches.

Freshman Holiday Eller leads the Lady Hawks with 218 kills in 25 matches this season while senior Eriel Jeffery is not far behind with 215 kills, averaging 2.09 kills per game. Rozner is the team's primary setter with 762 assists, while also leading the team in digs with 256. Coach Alex Temkin is in his second season with the Lady Hawks.

Last season, the Greyhounds earned a three-game sweep over the Lady Hawks in Princess Anne. Greenup tallied a team-high 14 kills while Corb added 12 to go with a hitting percentage of .478. Jamie Arndt recorded 19 digs for Loyola while Krystal Biegaj had 44 assists. Jana Milin led the Lady Hawks in the loss with a match-high 26 kills to go with a team-high 11 digs.

The Greyhounds return to the road this weekend to start a three-match road trip. Loyola will take on Fairfield on Saturday afternoon before traveling to Iona to face the league-leading Gaels.
