Baltimore, Md. - The Loyola volleyball team takes on a pair of conference foes this weekend as Iona and Manhattan visit Reitz Arena. The Gaels (14-8, 6-4 MAAC) visit Saturday at 7 p.m. ,while the Jaspers (5-14, 4-6 MAAC) match up with the Greyhounds on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Loyola (5-20, 1-9 MAAC) claimed a big win on Tuesday in non-conference play, sweeping Navy on the road in three consecutive sets, 25-20, 25-20 and 25-22. A pair of outside hitters, Christina Greenup and Nina Camaioni, led the team with 22 combined kills. The Greyhounds hit an impressive .224 clip against the Midshipmen, converting 80 percent of their sideout points in the first set (17 of 21). The team rolled from there, taking the second and third set as it broke an eight-match losing streak.
The Greyhounds hope to carry momentum into weekend play. Iona sits fourth in conference standings, earning a 1-1 split last weekend. Iona dropped a four-set decision to Siena Saturday, but responded with a four-set victory over Fairfield a day later. Three different players tallied 10 or more kills in the victory over the Stags.
Sophomore libero Allison Nieters earned her seventh MAAC Defensive Player of the Week award this week for the Gaels. She recorded 54 digs (6.75/set) and was perfect on 44 serve receptions in the split. Iona is ranked fourth in the country in digs per set.
Manhattan dropped a pair of home decisions over the weekend to Marist and Siena. Sunday's loss against the Saints ended a streak of 11 consecutive matches for the Jaspers in which they alternated between a win and a loss. The team is hitting .178 on the year, and is led by Sherryta Stokes, who pairs a team-high 3.24 kills a game with 2.66 digs a contest.
The Greyhounds were swept on the road against Iona, 3-0, back on September 20. Loyola hit just .046 in the match. A day later, Loyola fell to Manhattan in five sets despite a career-day from Camaioni, who had 20 kills and 17 digs.
