BALTIMORE, Md. - Looking to snap a three-match losing streak, the Greyhound volleyball team will begin its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference schedule on Saturday afternoon when Loyola takes on Rider at Alumni Gym beginning at 4:00 p.m.
Now 4-15 on the season, the Greyhounds suffered a three-game loss to local rival UMBC on Tuesday night at Reitz Arena for their second straight home loss. It was the first time Loyola has lost back-to-back matches at home since October 16-17 of last season when the Greyhounds dropped a four-game decision to Iona and a three-game sweep against Fairfield.
Senior outside hitter Becky Corb led the Greyhounds in the loss against the Retrievers on Tuesday night. She had nine kills and three digs in the setback, moving closer to the Loyola career kills record. Entering Saturday's match against the Broncs, Corb needs five kills to eclipse the mark of 1,436 career kills, which was set by Sarah Becker, `94. She also needs 58 digs to reach 1,000 for her career and would become just the second player in Loyola history to reach 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. She ranks among the MAAC leaders in kills per game, averaging 3.68 kills per game.
Senior libero Jamie Arndt also will be reaching for a major milestone, needing seven digs to reach 1,000 for her career. Ranked third in this week's MAAC leaders in digs per game (4.65), Arndt leads the Greyhounds with 302 digs this season in 65 games. She had a match-high 16 digs in the loss to UMBC on Tuesday night.
Freshman setter Marcellee Williams recorded a match-high 33 assists in the Greyhounds' loss to UMBC and now has 574 assists and 148 digs in 19 matches. She ranks among the MAAC leaders in assists per game (8.97).
The Broncs are also opening MAAC play against the Greyhounds after being idle this week. With a 7-12 record, Rider has not played since last weekend when the Broncs won one of three matches at the Fairleigh Dickinson Invite. After sweeping Wagner on Friday night, Rider lost a pair of matches to Manhattan and Fairleigh Dickinson.
Senior outside hitter Stefanie Lombardo leads the Broncs with 224 kills in 19 matches while also adding 206 digs. Sophomore Nastasja Avramovic ranks among the MAAC leaders in digs with 217, averaging 4.09 digs per game. Senior Embrey Minor has recorded 455 assists while Kristine Dormer has added 240 assists.
The Greyhounds handed the Broncs a four-game loss on October 30 of last season to earn their first conference win of the season. Corb recorded a career-high 29 kills in the win for Loyola, which had four players tally 10 or more kills. Setter Krystal Biegaj had a career-high 66 assists while adding 13 digs to go with 24 digs from Arndt.
After a Wednesday night match at Lafayette, the Greyhounds return home next weekend to face Manhattan and Saint Peter's in MAAC matches at Reitz Arena. Saturday's match against the Jaspers will begin at 7:00 p.m. while the Sunday showdown with the Peahens will commence at 2:00 p.m.
